This document provides a rationale for why physical development, health, and physical education (PDHPE) is as important as other key learning areas in schools. It notes that about a quarter of Australian children are overweight or obese, and many are not meeting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. PDHPE in schools encourages self-understanding and respect for others, promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles, and teaches decision-making and health skills. Teaching PDHPE creates awareness of healthy living and can ultimately improve quality of life. The document outlines what teachers and parents can do to support PDHPE, such as teachers providing engaging lessons and parents emphasizing the importance of physical activity and leading by example.

2. What are the facts???
In 2011-12, around a
quarter of all Australian
children aged 5-17 years
were either overweight
or obese. This has
significantly increased
since 1995.
Children need at least 60
mins of physical activity
each day and many are
not meeting this
requirement.
All children are physically,
cognitively and socially
developing, and PDHPE
acts to facilitate optimal
development and
maximum enjoyment.
3. Aims of PDHPE
Encourages an understanding and valuing of self and
others.
Promotes physical activity and an active lifestyle.
Focuses on and educates students about decision
making, developmental patterns, interpersonal
relationships, and personal health choices.
Teaches skills that enable action for better health and
movement outcomes.
4. Why is this beneficial??
Teaching PDHPE in
schools will create
awareness of the
importance of a healthy
lifestyle which will
ultimately improve
quality of life.
5. What do teachers do?
Teach PDHPE according
to the Syllabus, and to the
best of their ability.
Teachers will provide
opportunities to meet the
different needs, interests
and skills of all students.
Motivate and involve all
students in every activity.
Provide students with
informative PDHPE
lessons which are
interactive and
educational.
Create a fun atmosphere.
6. What can parents do??
Ensure that the same
amount of importance is
placed on PDHPE as on
every subject.
Encourage physical
activity everyday to
maximise physical
development and health.
Compliment in class
learning and lead by
example.
