- 27. Lennie is so oblivious to the social norms and whats expected of a typical man around this time. Like the balloon Lennie constantly has head in the clouds. I think it links with Crooks as the image shows a lone balloon flying over a desolate city. This links to the isolation of Crooks. Crooks as he is isolated from the normal lifestyle of the other characters just like the isolation of the hot air balloon in the image. Lennie because of the theme of isolation. He is a lone figure in the midst of nothing just like the balloon. Crooks because the image looks quite isolated, lonely and bleak there isnt much hope. It reminds me of George because all of the different colours show all of the different layers of his emotions. For example, the light at the top is the positive front he puts on to convince people that he and Lennie are normal. The black at the bottom represents his dark, desperate loneliness that he is unable to escape. George as he is trapped inside of the city just as he is now trapped on the ranch. The fog which has engulfed the city is similar to the one which has clouded him, hiding his true potential and personality. The hot air balloon is his hopes and dreams floating away this links to George once Lennie has died as he is now alone and all of his dreams are gone. This image links with Curleys Wife like the balloon she is alone and separated from the rest of the image. I think that the image represents Slim because the hot air balloon appears to have power over the landscape like Slims influence over the other characters. This image links with Lennie because the hot air balloon is set free from the mist just as Lennie was set free when he was shot. The balloon in the image makes me think of detachment and freedom. Because of this it reminds me of George at the end when he shoots Lennie. He is now free of the trouble Lennie brings him but he is also isolated. It makes me think of Slim as he has higher status than anyone else and the balloon is floating over everything else. The space between the buildings represents the loneliness and solitude of each character. They are stood together but not close. The hot air balloon symbolises Lennie and how he is detached from the city just as he is from the men in the bunkhouse. The hot air balloon resembles the loneliness portrayed by all of the characters in the novel, particularly Curleys Wife. Year 11 March 2014
