Captain Cloudesley Shovell misestimated his ship's longitude in 1707, leading his entire fleet of British ships to drown in a maritime disaster that killed 2000 people. Similarly, today's tools for measuring human capital retention and employee satisfaction, like retention rates and lengthy surveys, lack precision and cannot effectively determine if a company can attract, focus on, and retain talented employees. However, a large talent development research center was able to identify 12 core questions through a survey of over 1 million global employees that better measure the essential workplace elements needed to attract and keep top talent.

longitude, captains relied on their estimation for
average speed to make sense how far east or west
they travelled, or dropped a log over the side of the
ship and timed how long it took to float.
