Role of the Ophthalmology Dignity
Champion:
Tracy Culkin
To stand up and challenge disrespectful behaviour rather than
just tolerate it...
To act as a good role model by treating other people with
respect, particularly those who are less able to stand up for
themselves...
To speak up about dignity to improve the way that services are
organised and delivered...
And to Influence and inform colleagues on best practice skills and
new developments that will aid patient safety...
What is meant by the Dignity in Care
Campaign?

The Dignity in Care Campaign was launched in November 2006, and aims
to stimulate a national debate around dignity in care and create a care
system where there is zero tolerance of abuse and disrespect of adults. It is
led by Government in partnership with many organisations that provide
and commission care and protect the interests of those using care services
and their carers.
High quality care services that respect peoples
dignity should:
1. Have a zero tolerance of all forms of abuse
2. Support people with the same respect you would want for
yourself or a member of your family
3. Treat each person as an individual by offering a
personalised service
4. Enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of
independence, choice and control
5. Listen and support people to express their needs and wants
6. Respect peoples right to privacy
7. Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of
retribution
8. Engage with family members and carers as care partners
9. Assist people to maintain confidence and a positive self
esteem
10. Act to alleviate peoples loneliness and isolation

As the Dignity Champion for our department, I
am proposing to promote a...
Dignity and Nutrition Action Plan
Having enough to eat and drink is one of the most basic human
needs. And yet we know from the Department of Health's Dignity in Care
Campaign, that recent media articles, research reports and official
complaints, that some vulnerable people are still not having THIS
fundamental need met.
To address these issues, during the dignity action day on the 1st
of
February 2012, I am proposing to highlight the nutritional needs of
vulnerable patients on the departments notice boards and encourage
staff to participate in nutrition and hydration study sessions on 23/1/12-
25/1/12 & 27/1/12. I will also be encouraging some of our patients to
complete a survey from 31/1/12 to 3/2/12 and will be happy to feedback
findings.
Please note I would really appreciate your support during this time
many thanks Staff Nurse Tracy Culkin

The Patients/Relatives will then be asked to complete the questioner and
return it back to a member of staff /or put it into a questioner feedback
