Editor's Notes

  • #2: Introduction of myself and set the tone of the presentation
  • #3: The purpose of this presentation is to provide you with a brief summary of what the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good Program of Berea College has accomplished in the community this summer, the role of digital marketing and how five different social media platforms can impact the revenue stream of small local businesses.
  • #4: The problem facing Appalachian economic development in the communities we were assigned to, Letcher and Owsley are: lack of youth(creative class)lack of diversity(example how EPG functions with different majors and compare migration rates)Decrease in Purchasing Power caused by Unemployment(slight increase on graph)The most significant new piece of information about the Appalachian Region for me is Owsley Letcher Creative class, 2000 0 0Employment change rate, 2009-2010 0.70 -1.79High out-migration, 1988-2008 1 1%Non-Hispanic Native American, 2010 0.25 0.14Percent Non-Hispanic White, 2010 97.98 98.37% of farms with sales less than $10,000 84.10 93.94Poverty rate, 2010 40.1 23.2Unemployment rate, 2009 10.8 11Unemployment rate, 2010 11.4 11.4*United States of America . • #5: Who I wasPersonal growth assumptions or expectations did you bring to the EPG summer situation? How did these assumptions affect what you did or didnt think, feel, decide, or do? To what extent did these assumptions prove true? If they did not prove true, why was there a discrepancy? How did you come to experience the value of design thinking and human centered approaches How did the concepts we studied emerge in the EPG experience (When did you see it or note its absence? How did or should you or someone else (perhaps a team member) use the concept? What specific ways are they different now than before the EPG Summer Institute? *Salstrom, Paul.Appalachia's Path to Dependency: Rethinking a Region's Economic History. 1998. • #13: Entrepreneurial leadership is creating opportunities to learn for yourself and others, enhance economic growth while identifying and exploiting assets in the community. The impact of small local businesses is evident as you consider how best to enhance your local economic growth. Having visited three other states as tourists in Central Appalachia to gain perspectives, and completed a comparative study of how these small local businesses are shifting to alternative economies in the region. We witnessed the role of civic leaders and how they have been able to sustain economic change. (Advocating change in a community)
  • #14: Connections in Networking(Mobilizing resources)Internship Idea fro next summerSocial Media expertise to community development(Distinguishing which social media platform fits the business model)Confidence(Talking to business owners face to face, giving them stats first then talking about the SOLOMO campaign)Knowledge about Eastern Kentucky(Readings(path to dependecy about japan, interviews and Lectures(Chad barrys example about what is appalachia)Developing ethical fiber- how much the community is valuable to you and what innovative solutions can you come up with to solve the problems facing them economically and environmentally.

Guests with Smartphones can use a HTML 5 web application and guests with Non-Smartphones can use text messaging. Attached is a more detailed description of our newest system. We have built systems for use in 6 hotels across 3 states and for local coffee shops.I would be happy to discuss our current system or if we could be of assistance in the development of a custom solution.Enactusis an international non-profit organization that works with student leaders in higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders
