Petronas Cloud Migration For
Core Business Application
Presenter : Rohan Singh
Project Overview & Objective
● Petronas currently operates an old traditional application on-premises.
● Business growth and increasing customer demand are driving the need for modern
infrastructure.
● The application faces higher customer frequency, highlighting the need for scalability.
● A critical requirement is maintaining the security of sensitive data during migration.
● The main objective is to build a scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant
infrastructure.
● Data security is essential, with protection for both in-transit and at-rest data.
● The infrastructure must be secured against various cyber threats.
● The organization seeks a cost-efficient solution with disaster recovery capabilities.
● Cloud migration is identified as the optimal path to achieve these objectives.
● Benefits the organisation by saving cost of maintenance and achieve pay as you go basis
not investing large amount on on premises infrastructure at the start.
● We taking Oracle database itself as our database engine on premises
Key Requirements for Successful Cloud Migration
● To achieve high availability, fault tolerance, security, disaster recovery, and cost-efficiency, the project
requires careful planning. We will adopt the Agile methodology for the migration process, ensuring
effective tracking through tickets and sprint dashboards for smooth progress monitoring.
● Another major requirement is choice of cloud platform third party tools which will help us to fulfill the
requirements in cost efficient way and meeting all the compliance(security and data integrity).
● The initial focus is to set up the cloud development environment and grant access to developers, ensuring
uninterrupted development and meeting tight deadlines.
● The architecture will transform applications into containers for optimal resource utilization, providing a
lightweight, cost-efficient, and secure solution to handle thousands of concurrent customers.
● To meet deadlines, we will automate the entire infrastructure from the start, including deployment and
testing, to ensure high efficiency and quality. Although it may take longer initially due to script setup, it will
save time in the long run.
● Sensitive data migration requires strong encryption, using third-party or cloud-native tools. Scalability for
the database will be ensured through caching services and read replicas.
● To meet the RPO of 5 minutes and RTO of 30 minutes, a scaled-down, always-available infrastructure in a
separate region is needed, with database sync and blue-green deployments of applications for each release
cycle.
Choosing the Optimal Cloud Platform to Meet Business Requirements
Feature GCP AWS OCI
Security - IAM
- Data encryption at rest and in
transit
- VPC Service Controls
- IAM and granular access policies
- KMS for encryption
- Advanced security tools
(GuardDuty)
- IAM with granular access control
- Encryption via Oracle Vault
- Security Zones & Cloud Guard
Disaster Recovery - Multi-region failover
- Cross-region replication for Cloud
SQL & Spanner
- Global database (Aurora Global)
- Cross-region replication for S3,
RDS
- Cross-region DR with Oracle
Autonomous DB
- DRaaS available for custom
architectures
Cost efficiency - Sustained use discounts
- Preemptible VMs
- Fine-grained scaling
- Reserved Instances
- Savings Plans
- Spot Instances for cost savings
- Flexible compute pricing (OCPUs)
- Lower cost for enterprise
workloads
- Autonomous Database reduces
cost
Choosing the Optimal Cloud Platform to Meet Business Requirements
Feature GCP AWS OCI
High Availability - Global load balancing across
multi-regions
- GKE for Kubernetes with HA
- Regional storage replication
-Multi-region/Availability Zones
(AZ) with Auto Scaling Groups
- EKS for Kubernetes
- Cross-region replication
- Multiple Fault and Availability
Domains (ADs)
- OKE (Oracle Kubernetes Engine)
- Resilient across regions
Scalability - GKE auto-scaling (pods & nodes)
- Cloud SQL auto-scaling for DB
- Serverless (Cloud Run)
- EKS auto-scaling (containers,
compute)
- Aurora Serverless
- Lambda for serverless workloads
- OKE with auto-scaling
- OCI Compute auto-scaling
- Autonomous Database auto-
scaling
After Comparison Choice Offers a strong container ecosystem
through Google Kubernetes Engine
(GKE) with auto-scaling and multi-
region support which can be achieved
in other clouds and is cost efficient
than AWS cloud. But AI tools and
business could make it costlier in
future.
AWS provides strong DR planning
support.However most expensive
solution compared to other clouds. But
have wide variety of options to select
which other clouds also offers.
OCI cloud Platform Cost-efficient for
enterprise workloads due to flexible
pricing and integrated services like
Autonomous Database. And meets all
the compliance requirements hence its
the best choice.

Cloud Services for Migration and Their Key Benefits
● Cost Savings & Tracking: With a Pay-as-you-go model, the organization can save a significant amount by paying only for what
they use. Expenses can be tracked for each environment, helping teams regularly optimize costs and scale infrastructure
efficiently.
● Secure Infrastructure:The infrastructure is highly secure, using policies, WAF (Web Application Firewall), SSL certificates, and
services like Vault to ensure data is protected. This setup makes the system highly trusted and secure.
● Improved Release Process:Automation has streamlined the release process, reducing the time required for new
deployments. Teams now have better visibility of infrastructure activities, enabling faster rollbacks and more efficient scaling.
● Scalability & Traffic Management:The infrastructure has autoscaling enabled, ensuring it can handle variable loads. Load
balancers distribute traffic efficiently, and a caching solution reduces the load on the master database by managing frequent
read operations.
● Disaster Protection:The solution is protected against disasters, ensuring that natural calamities or accidental events do not
impact the application's uptime, keeping the service always available.
● Efficient Resource Management:Resources are tracked and managed efficiently using tools like Jira, Agile practices, daily
stand-ups, and proper documentation in Confluence. This ensures that all project information is organized and easily
accessible, aiding in knowledge transfer and onboarding or offboarding of employees.
