People with intellectual disabilities discussed big issues like attitudes towards disability, employment difficulties, lack of friends, poor treatment by some staff and service providers, transport access issues, and lack of accessible information and equality. Attendees agreed to share information to change attitudes, tell their personal stories, work on addressing these big issues, involve people with intellectual disabilities more in their organizations, and learn to create easy to read information. The group plans to share the results with government ministers, continue informing others, address the issues raised, and involve more people in advocacy through their organization.

Overview by Alison: Over the 17 years since my diagnosis with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I have slowly moved along a continuum reclaiming power in respect of my own health. I then chose to go further and use insight gained along the way to push for change in the wider system. My talk will focus on how I was able to make the transition from passive patient to patient leader. Patient leadership requires a share in power between patient and professional and an acknowledgement that we are more than a “voice”, more than our “patient story”, but also a source of skills and expertise which can be used to effect transformational change. I believe passionately in genuine co-production – in bringing together patients and professionals in equal partnership, questioning assumptions on all sides and challenging our notion of hierarchy. This has its challenges for all concerned. We are all – to some extent – in boxes labelled by our job title or our diagnosis. These boxes can be defensive bunkers offering an illusion of protection from fear of change in an already chaotic, uncertain climate. My talk will discuss these challenges and offer solutions as to how we might address them together. Hopefully my session will help participants find the courage to emerge from boxes labelled “patient” or “professional”, and risk venturing into the territory where both sides are prepared to walk in the shoes of the other and boundaries are blurred. Getting started with Riak in the Cloud involves provisioning a Riak cluster on Engine Yard and optimizing it for performance. Key steps include choosing instance types like m1.large or m1.xlarge that are EBS-optimized, having at least 5 nodes, setting the ring size to 256, disabling swap, using the Bitcask backend, enabling kernel optimizations, and monitoring and backing up the cluster. This session, led by Warren Cariou, Lead Editor of the second edition of Gregory Younging’s Elements of Indigenous Style, is for book industry professionals eager to learn and apply Indigenous teachings to their work. Using Elements of Indigenous Style as a foundation, this session delves into its mind-opening content, which goes beyond the scope of a traditional style guide. The book advocates for the indigenization of publishing and addresses topics such as culturally appropriate publishing practices; understanding identity and community affiliation; Two-Spirit, trans, and Indigiqueer contexts; practices to support Indigenous linguistic and cultural sovereignty; and emerging issues in the digital environment. Warren provides actionable recommendations and best practices for publishers working on literary projects by or about Indigenous authors, which can be applied more broadly to other underrepresented communities.
