Phonetics focuses on the actual sounds produced during speech, while phonology focuses on how sounds pattern and relate within a language's sound system. Phonetics examines the physical aspects of sounds, such as place and manner of articulation. Phonology studies abstract sound units and how they are organized and combined to convey meaning. For example, in English there are at least six ways to pronounce the /t/ sound depending on context. Phonology also examines how the same sounds may be pronounced differently depending on social or regional dialects.
