Plant responses to environmental stimuli are called tropisms. Tropisms describe the growth or turning movement of a plant in response to external factors and can be positive, towards the stimulus, or negative, away from the stimulus. The main tropisms include phototropism, where plants grow towards light; geotropism, where plants grow towards or against gravity; thigmotropism, where plants respond to physical touch; and hydrotropism, where plants sense and grow towards sources of water.
