Pleven is a city located in central Bulgaria along the Danube River valley, 160km from the capital Sofia. It has a population of 106,000 people and serves as the administrative center for the surrounding region. Pleven has a long history dating back over 5,000 years when Thracians inhabited the area, and it later became part of the Roman Empire. Archaeological findings show the city had important administrative, military, and religious buildings. Pleven has an ancient history - the end of the 5th
millennium BC . Numerous archaeological findings are evidence of
the high material and spiritual culture of the Thracians , who
inhabited the region thousands of years .
At the beginning of the new era these lands became part of
the Roman Empire. On the road from Oescus to Philippopolis in
today Pleven the Roman road station Storgozia and later castle of
the same name . Archaeological studies talk about the massive
construction of administrative, military and religious buildings. One
of the most valuable archaeological monuments is the early
Christian basilica from the 4th century , the second largest in
Bulgaria after the royal basilica in Pliska.
