Editor's Notes

  1. Hi friends! Im Hannah and today I am going to try to unravel some of the mysteries of our amazing universe! The earth, moon, and sun are miraculous things and wait until you find out how much they effect our daily life!
  2. When we stare at the night sky, it feels as though the stars are spinning. But did you know, we are actually the ones spinning, and the stars are standing still!
  3. It takes the Earth 24 hours to make a complete rotation, making one whole day. As the Earth rotates, it orbits around the sun. Orbit means the path described by one celestial body in its revolution about another. It takes the earth 365 and 村 days to orbit around the sun, giving us one calendar year. At the same time, the moon orbits around Earth. When one half of the earth is facing the moon, the other half is facing the sun. This creates night and day. Since the earth is a sphere, only one portion at a time is directly facing the earth. This is when we see the sun at the highest point in the sky. This also creates our time zones.
  4. Because the earth sits at a slight tilt, as it turns, the we see a change in seasons. The axis is the imaginary line upon which the earth is tilted. When you are closest to the sun, it is Summer. Similarly, when we are tilted away from the sun, we have winter.
  5. Since the moon orbits the earth, the illuminated part seems to change shape. The changing shapes of the moon are called the Lunar phases. It takes 29.5 days to complete a lunar phase cycle. the lunar phases are created by changing angles of the earth, the moon and the sun, as the moon orbits the earth. The moon phases are quarter, gibbous, full, cresent, and new. When the illuminated edge of the moon appears on the left, it is called waning. When it is on the right, its called waxing. When the earth is directly in between the moon and sun, we have a full moon, meaning we are able to see the whole body. When the moon is in between the earth and sun, it is called a new moon and we do not see a moon. Because the sun is illuminating the side of the moon away from the earth, the moon appears dark to the earth, and we can not see it.
