Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a type of polyester formed from terephthalic acid and ethane-1,2-diol. PET is a hard, semi-crystalline and transparent plastic with excellent tensile strength, chemical resistance and light weight, making it suitable for rigid food packaging applications like bottles and containers. While PET has advantages like toughness and recyclability, it also has disadvantages such as susceptibility to acid and base attacks and low thermal and solvent resistance. PET is commonly used for packaging carbonated beverages, baked goods, frozen foods, tea, coffee and spices.
