Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and identify the smallest units of sound, or phonemes, that make up words and can change their meaning. For example, the word "cat" has three distinct phonemes - /c/, /a/, and /t/ - and the word "dog" also has three phonemes - /d/, /o/, and /g/. Being able to segment words into individual phonemes is an important part of phonemic awareness.
