An audience is a group of people who consume media. There are two types of media: passive consumption (Media 1.0) and interactive consumption (Media 2.0). Audiences are important because without them, there would be no profit from media productions. There are mass audiences of large, similar groups and niche audiences of smaller, unique groups. Socio-economic classifications categorize audiences based on occupation from high (A) to low (E). Target audiences are identified based on factors like age, gender, interests to effectively engage specific demographics.
2. What is an audience?
• An audience is an individual or a group of
people who read or consumes any form of
media. Media can be anything from radio
shows to newspapers.
• There are 2 types of media. The first is Media
1.0 which is sat watching something or
reading… Media 2.0 is consuming the media
but also interacting at the same time.
3. Why are audiences important?
• Well if you have no audience you would have
no media
• No audience = no profit.
• You don’t always pay for the media but there
are adverts which sponsor the production.
4. Types of audiences.
• Mass audience = large group of people who
have similar tastes.
• Niche audience = much smaller but very
influential group of people with an unique
interest.
5. Socio – economic scale.
• A = Surgeons, chief executives.
• B = Bank manager, teacher.
• C1 = Shop floor superisor, sales person.
• C2 = electricians, carpenters.
• D = messenger, bin man.
• E = Pensionners, unemployed.
6. Example:
• The movie Cinderella, you would think is
aimed at young children (3-12 years old) but
in fact the age is 7 +.
• Socio: B, C’S, D.
• Psychographic: The mainstream, single
women, family’s with teenage children.
• Demographic: Females, 7-40.
7. A film relating to our genre.
• Black swan target audience.
Here it says that males under the
age of 18 were the most popular
to see this film which is different
as you would of thought that the
target audience would be
females aged 18-29 as it is a film
including ballet.
8. Shutter island
The target audience for shutter island was
once again males between the age of 18
and 40 as of the gender of the main
character ( male ). The age of the main
character is around 30 years old. The
soundtrack includes David Bowie which
would attract males around 30 years of
age.
9. Conclusion.
• In conclusion, our target audience would be
females from the age of 16 to 30 as the main
characters vary from 15 to late 20’s.
• The socio – economic states would be A,B C’S
and D.
• Deographic: Females aged between 15 and
30.
• Psychographic: Mainstream and explorer.
