Poverty in Africa is widespread and severe. Over 70% of Africans living in poverty reside in rural areas and depend on agriculture for survival, yet aid to agriculture is decreasing. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, more than 218 million people live in extreme poverty, and the rate of poverty reduction has slowed since the 1970s. Poverty perpetuates from generation to generation, so identifying ways to increase access to education, healthcare, water and sanitation, economic opportunities, and government assistance can help reduce poverty levels in Africa.
