Power Technologies: organisation and operation of temporary power systems
Power Technologies¡¯ successful
experience in the organization and
operation of temporary power
systems at the Winter Olympic Games
in Sochi.
Power Technologies
would like to explain
the concept of
providing a temporary
power distribution
system for an event
such as the Olympic
Games.
The explanation of providing a
temporary power system relates
to additional electrical
requirements to ensure a secure
backup system to the normal
utility supply.
Additional temporary power requirements include
Temporary transformers, Electrical Generators,
temporary cabling, temporary purpose event electrical
distribution panels (plug and play style) and cable
management systems.
The purpose of a temporary electrical
installation is that it can be removed in total
enhancing sustainability and returning the
site to its original mode of operation.
The scale of the work in the Winter Games in Sochi
was huge and included 22 Olympic sporting
competition and non completion venues including 3
Olympic villages, 2 Main Media centers, Medals
Piazza; temporary Olympic park broadcast studios
and the Opening and Closing stadium.
In addition to total electrical temporary
overlay specifications, permanent or
legacy venues also require additional
electrical requirements such as
commentary positions, technology and
Commentary Control rooms as examples.
It should be noted that
all temporary electrical
installations adhere to
all local electrical
codes and is equal in
quality to the
permanent electrical
installations.
In early 2013 Power Technologies
was successful in securing the
Sochi 2014 Olympic and
Paralympic Games for coastal and
mountain clusters in the category
of sole Temporary Power provider.
This category consisted of
temporary 400 volt electrical
distribution systems and uniquely
10 KV high voltage distribution
systems.
Some aspects regarding the Sochi 2014
Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Design
Design of temporary 400 volt and
10kv systems approved and
accepted by the Organizing
Committee.
All design of the temporary
electrical systems, installation and
commissioning was all completed
within an extremely difficult and
short time scale.
All project related design work adhered to all
local codes and regulations including health
and safety, electrical codes, environmental
requirements and dbA sound levels.
Installation, Commissioning and Operation
All commissioning and testing was completed on
time and in accordance with all customer
requirements. This included the extensive work
and requirements of the two main media
centers and their complicated systems.
Opening and closing
Ceremonies was supplied
completely by Power
Technologies generator
sets running in prime as
opposed to back up to the
main utility system.
This is the usual mode of operation required
by the Opening and Closing production team.
Challenges included refueling and extensive
cable runs to the roof of the stadium.
Decommissioning
All equipment was successfully
removed on time and all venues
restored to pre Game conditions.
Equipment Statistics
- 73 substations installed
- 150 generators (120 MW of
installed temporary power)
- 800 km of temporary
electrical cable
- 2000 temporary power
electrical distribution panels
- Over 500 staff
