Emperor Ashoka ruled over a large part of India from his capital of Pataliputra. He fought the Kalinga War to bring the Kalinga region under his rule, which resulted in many deaths and injuries. This saddened Ashoka and led him to decide to no longer engage in wars. Ashoka worked to improve life for his people by planting trees, constructing rest houses for travelers, building wells, and adopting new agricultural techniques. The fourteen major rock edicts of Ashoka showed his adoption of Buddhist and Hindu principles such as non-violence, religious tolerance, and spreading his moral code known as Dhamma.
