 Soccer is a sport played between two teams of eleven players
with a spherical ball . It is played by 250 million players in over
200 countries ,making it the world’s most popular sport. The
game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The
object of the game is to score by using any part of the body
besides the arms and hands to get the ball into the opposing goal.
The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball
with their hands or arms while it is in and only in the penalty
area. Outfield players mostly use their feet to strike or pass the

 THE DURATION OF MATCH – Matches consist of two 45
minute halves, unless the two teams and referee agree otherwise
before the start of play . The half-time interval must not exceed 15
minutes .
 THE STARTING AND STOPPING OF SOCCER PLAY – At the
start of a soccer period or after a goal, there is kick-off from the center
circle. At the kick-off all the soccer players must be on their side of the
field. Only the player kicking the kick-off is allowed inside the circle.
 THROW IN – When the soccer ball has gone out of bounds, the
team that last touched the ball loses possession and the opposing

team gets to throw-in the ball from the point where the ball
crossed out of bounds.
 CORNER KICK- When the defending team last touches the ball
and it crosses the goal line, the opposing team gets to kick the ball
from the corner of the field.
 GOAL KICK- When the offensive team touches the ball before it
crosses the goal line, the goalie gets to kick the ball from goal box.
 PENALTY KICK- When a foul occurs in the penalty area, the
fouled team is awarded a penalty kick.
 SOCCER FOULS- Soccer fouls can be any number of unfair
advantages taken by a player that are called by the referee. These
can include tripping, pushing and touching the ball

with hands. Very unsportsmanlike behavior may result in yellow
card (the player cannot play the next match) or a red card (the player
is ejected from the game).
 OFFSIDE RULE- The offensive player is offside if they are
nearer to the opponent’s goal line than both the second last and
last opponent and the soccer ball.
 OUT OF BOUNDS- It occurs when the ball completely crosses
the line boundary.
 THROW IN- When throwing the ball in at throw-in, the ball
must be thrown from behind the boundary and over the head
using both hands. When the ball leaves the thrower’s hands,
both of his feet must be touching the ground.

 The contemporary history of world’s favourite game spans
100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby
football branched of their different courses and the Football
Association in England was formed- becoming the sport’s
first governing body. The very earliest form of the game for
which there is scientific evidence was an exercise from a
military manual dating back to the second and third
centuries BC in China. In China, it was during the Han
Dynasty that people dribbled leather balls by kicking into
small nets. Recorded facts also support the fact that Roman

 and Greeks used to play ball for fun and frolic. Some facts
point to Kyoto in Japan where kicking of ball was a popular
sport. It is said that early growth of the modern soccer was
started in England. It is also said that the old form of soccer
used to allow many ill practices like kicking, punching, biting
and gouging. Sometimes the competition grew fierce and
masses got so wild that there were frequent incidents of
violence during the game. King Edward III banned soccer in
1365 owing to grow incidents of violence and military
indulgence in the sport. In 1424 King James I of Scotland also
proclaimed in the Parliament- “ No man shall play soccer”

The history of modern day soccer was established in 1863. In
the October 1863, eleven representatives from London clubs an
schools met at the Freemason’s Tavern to set up common
fundamental rules to control the matches amongst themselves. The
outcome of this meeting was the formation of the Football
Association. In December the rugby football and Association football
finally split as the supporters of the Rugby School rules walked out.
Firmly establishing the foundation of soccer in 1869, the
Football Association strictly banned any kind of handling of the ball.
Soccer’s popularity spread rapidly during the 1800s.FIFA was
established in the year 1904 and by the early 1930s, different leagues
were operating from various countries.

FIFA World Cup. Ever since the tentative competition in Uruguay in
1930. FIFA’s flagship has constantly grown in popularity and
prestige. A group of visionary French football administrators, led in
in the 1920s by the innotiative Jules Rimet, are credited with the
original idea of bringing the world’s strongest national football teams
together to compete for the title of World Champions. The original
gold trophy bore Jules Rimet’s name and was contested three times in
the 1930s, before the World War put a 12-year stop to the
competition. When it resumed, the FIFA World Cup rapidly
advanced to its-undisputed status as the greatest single sport event of
