My first unforgettable volunteer experience was cleaning a park in Brooklyn, New York where I used to live.
After the September 11 World Trade Center incident in 2001, there were many Japanese residents who
wanted to do something for New York but didn't know how.
At first, my friend Kazumi and I were thinking of applying individually for a park cleaning volunteer event,
but we decided to invite the rest of the Japanese community in New York to participate. I wrote a press
release on a local Japanese newspaper and over 100 people contacted me. The Japan Team was hastily
formed.
On the day of the volunteer event, Japanese people from various backgrounds with differences in age,
occupation, and years of stay in New York, gathered and wore the same T-shirt, and worked hard to
beautify the park for a day. The volunteers who met for the first time worked together and shared a sense
of accomplishment. The beer we drank together after volunteering was more delicious than usual.
It was not very common or easy for local Japanese people to volunteer in New York at that time. But when
we tried it, many of us were impressed that it was so fun and fulfilling. I still can't forget that feeling.
Based on this experience, a few interested friends and I eventually established a non-profit organization in
2002 to provide opportunities for as many people as possible to experience the joy of making a difference.
Since then, I have been involved in a wide range of volunteer activities totaling more than 800 times.
Activities include promoting mutual understanding between different cultures through introducing Japanese
culture to children, visiting facilities for the elderly and providing beauty services such as makeup, nails and
hair care, and serving meals at soup kitchens to the homeless. The activities have continued for 18 years,
and the number of volunteers who have participated has exceeded more than 10,000. I would like to
express my heartfelt gratitude to the over 200 volunteer staff who have supported the operation.
I am awed and inspired by the people who are actively volunteering for various causes in the community in
the spirit of oneness.
I truly believe that volunteering enriches our minds and brings people together. It's priceless.
