Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been chosen for this year's
Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for being

The Supreme Court has pulled up Centre for being casual in handling 2G
case before it. The Supreme court has asked the government to explain
why entire 2G spectrum, licenses for which were cancelled by it, were not

Digitisation of cable TV/News on air
The government today said the second phase of digitisation of cable TV will be
completed by 31st of March next year. Addressing a press conference in New
Delhi, Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said that,
consumers in 38 cities, having a population of over 10 lakh, will be benefitted
by the digitisation. He sought the cooperation of the state governments for
implemention of the second phase. Tiwari said that his ministry has achieved
97 per cent success of digitisation including DTH in the four metros, Delhi,
Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai.

The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and the CBI on a plea for
a probe by a special investigation team into the alleged irregularities in the coal
block allocations. A bench of justices R M Lodha and A R Dave also sought
response from them on a public interest litigation petition seeking cancellation
of the licenses granted by the government for coal blocks to various private
companies.

Record-setting Indian Sunita Williams along with two fellow astronauts safely
returned to Earth today from the International Space Station, touching down on
the steppes of central Kazakhstan, after spending four months in orbit. It was a
perfect landing for Williams and two astronauts, Flight Engineers Yuri
Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide, as they touched down in the dark, chilly
expanses of central Kazakhstan on board a Russian Soyuz capsule.

DMK submits letter to Prez withdrawing support to UPA

DMK has withdrawn its support to the UPA Government over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
A five-member DMK delegation headed by T R Baalu handed over a letter by party supremo M Karunanidhi to
President Pranab Mukherjee last night at 10.30 PM at Rashtrapati Bhavan withdrawing support of its 18 Lok
Sabha MPs to the UPA government.
Mr. Baalu told reporters that DMK ministers will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today to submit their
resignations.

stranded in state
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi conducted an aerial
survey of flood and landslide affected areas of Uttarakhand this afternoon. Dr. Singh yesterday
spoke to Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and assured him of all assistance in rescue and relief
operations in the State. The Prime Minister shared the anguish and distress of the affected people.
He said that assistance was already being provided by the Army and Air Force to rescue stranded
people and to provide relief. Dr. Singh has also directed all agencies of the Union Government to
assist in rescue and relief operations in the flood affected areas of the State. Briefing reporters
after the Congress Core Group meeting, at the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi to discuss
flood situation in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said
all efforts are being made to rescue people in the affected areas of Uttarakhand. He said three
battalions of ITBP have been dispatched to the State. He added that 62,790 people are still
stranded in the State. Our correspondent reports that as per latest reports, 102 people have died
whereas a number of people are still missing. Our correspondent also adds that releif and rescue
operations are continuing in the flood and landslides affected areas in Uttarakhand. The adjacent
areas of Kedarnath Shrine have also been affected severely while partial damage to Kedearnath
temple has been reported. Pilgrims of Kailash Mansarover yatra have been halted near Bundi in
Pithoragarh district. With the improvement in weather in Uttarakhand, relief and rescue work has
been expedited. Roads blocked by landslides are being opened up gradually for movement of
vehicles in several affected areas. 22 Army and private helicopters have been deployed to carry
out relief and rescue work in full swing. Jawans of Indian Army, ITBP and NDRF have been
carrying rescue and relief work on war footing. More than 20 thousand people including pilgrims
and tourists bound for char dham yatra have so far been evacuated while 50 thousand people are

EU BAN ON MANGOES
India has asked the European Union to lift the ban on the import of Indian mangoes. In
a letter to EU Trade Commissioner Karl De Gucht, Commerce and Industry Minister
Anand Sharma said that the recent ban has caused considerable apprehension and alarm
in the country. On Monday, the EU banned the import of mangoes from India for the
period, beginning today till December next year. The ban was imposed after authorities
found consignments infested with fruit flies.
