This study examined the effects of boat noise on juvenile red drum and spotted sea trout over an 8 week period. The fish were exposed to background noise, continuous noise, or intermittent noise treatments in tanks. Results showed no significant differences in growth rates, weight, length, condition factor or survival between noise treatments for either species. While both species initially responded to noise by circling, they rapidly adapted. The findings suggest these species can adapt physiologically to noise stress in the short term in a controlled setting. Further research is needed to understand impacts of long-term or multiple stressor exposure that may occur in wild estuary environments.
