The document provides guidance for preaching the word of God based on 2 Timothy 4:1-5. It emphasizes preaching from the Bible rather than opinions, criticisms, or current events. It also stresses encouraging one's congregation with good teaching that is relevant, understandable, and prepared. The document encourages emulating Jesus' teaching style of using illustrations and involving the five senses, and stresses taking time to carefully read, research, write, review and deliver one's sermons.

4. 2 Timothy 4:1-5
4 I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ
Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead
when he appears to set up his Kingdom: 2 Preach the
word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is
favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and
encourage your people with good
teaching.
3 For
a time is coming when people will no longer listen to
sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own
desires and will look for teachers who will tell them
whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject
the truth and chase after myths.
5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Dont
be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling
others the Good News, and fully carry out the
5. Preach the Word of God
Dont preach
Opinions (The only opinion that matters when you
preach is Gods.)
Criticisms (Let the people know what you are for and
not just what you are against.)
A topic (Unless that topic is specifically in your text
leave it alone)
A current event (Unless the text directly points to the
event leave it alone.)
A commentary (Commentary during sermon prep
Bible during the sermon)
Quotes (Quotes are GREAT as a snack, but not as
the meal)
Data (Data can only be used when strengthening a
Biblical argument)
6. Encourage your people with good
teaching
Good teaching isnt:
Boring (Passion and a burden kill boredom)
Irrelevant (If your sermon isnt relevant than probably
arent preaching the word)
Heretical (Against clear Biblical teaching)
Long-winded (The sermon on the mount can be read in
under 15 minutes)
Always angry (The Bible should be used for correction
not as a weapon)
Always nice (Understand that Gods wrath is taught
along with Gods love)
Unprepared (Care enough about others to not waste
their time)
Crowded (Preach a text, maybe two dont overload)
7. Work at telling others the Good
News
Work means:
It doesnt come easily
You must be willing to face the challenges ahead
You must understand that the GOOD NEWS should
be delivered in a way that doesnt jeopardize its
GOODNESS to the listener, and this takes WORK!
8. Jesus Teaching Style:
Use illustrations
Illustrations make the Biblical teaching come alive
Jesus knew this and used them all the time!
Teach in view of the 5 senses
See (The dove descending during baptism)
Taste (Water to wine)
Touch (Washing the disciples feet)
Feel (Mud on the eyes)
Listen (He spoke and he allowed others to speak)
Dont be distracted
Stay on point Dont get distracted by the mob.
9. The text picks you
you dont pick the
text.
read, pray, listen, read, repeat
