Anaesthesia has several stages. It begins with induction, where anaesthetic drugs are administered to cause unconsciousness. Next is maintenance, where anaesthesia is maintained at the appropriate level through additional drugs or gases while the surgery is performed. Finally, emergence occurs as the effects of the anaesthetic drugs wear off and the patient regains consciousness at the end of the surgery.
