The Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program aims to promote friendship and mutual understanding between youths from ASEAN countries and Japan. Established in 1974, the program brings young people from Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia together on a ship for activities like discussions, cultural performances, and solidarity building. The 42nd voyage of the program visited ports in Tokyo, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Yangon, and Kota Kinabalu and was participated in by an Indonesian youth named Hijjaz Sutriadi who sailed on board the Nippon Maru ship and experienced seasickness twice.
