Functional Beverages - the way Mother Nature intendedRichard Enticott
油
The two most important slides I shared at the world tea expo this week
Competition for agricultural land is rampant globally and climate change is rewriting the farming landscape. Food demand is expected to grow between 35 and 60% by 2050 (FAO)
The ability to sustainably supply specialty botanical crops used in fruit and herbal tea blends will increasingly come under threat and the risk of "extinction" for some is real.
My post is for consumers to offer some shopping advice:
If you are serious about making healthy beverage choices, preparing plant parts as an infusion is the best option you have. It is why humans have been doing so for thousands of years for medicinal purposes.
The market is flooded with functional beverages mostly in Ready-To-Drink form and typically containing extracts from plant material to support the intended function.
But how functional are they really? The majority, not very if at all based upon the actual plant content. Brewed Tea however, is. Very.
A can or bottle of any functional beverage will cost up to $5 per serving depending upon the value proposition and product placement.
A fruit and herbal tea costs around $0.25 per serving in the grocery store.
Every time you brew a cup of fruit and herbal tea you touch the lives of millions of people working in farming communities around the world. Every time you drink an RTD can or bottle you are mostly enriching individuals and investors hoping to sell their brand to large beverage companies.
Who would you rather support in addition to supporting your own health?

15. CASE STUDY
The dispute between the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI)
and Swiggy highlights the growing tension between food delivery
platforms and restaurants. In 2021, NRAI accused Swiggy of unfair trade
practices, including high commission fees, lack of data sharing, deep
discounting, and delayed payments, making it harder for small
businesses to thrive. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) launched
an investigation in 2022 to assess whether Swiggys practices were anti-
competitive. While no penalties were imposed, the scrutiny pushed Swiggy
to revise some policies, improve transparency, and offer better terms to
restaurant partners.
