This document outlines Pavithira Tiruvalluvan's final year project proposal for a media art installation about time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The proposal discusses researching time-lapse photography and video art, conducting observations of KL, developing a concept to show the beauty of KL through time changes using a video installation, and experimental work creating a sample time-lapse video. The project will involve taking photographs around KL every 20 seconds over various times of day to compile into a 30-second, 4-screen video art installation depicting morning, afternoon, evening and night.
2. PROPOSAL
Topic
Urban life style
Title
Time
Background
Time is a dimension in which events can be ordered from the past through the
present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events and the
intervals between them. Time travel could hypothetically involve moving
backward in time to a moment earlier than the starting point, or forward to the
future of that point without the need for the traveler to experience the
intervening period
Aim
To addressing the changes on time changes in city of Kuala Lumpur by focusing
only the moment of time.
3. PROPOSAL
Problem Identification
*How to show the busy city in a beautiful way
*Does the installation need to be interactive with the user
* What kind of media that this installation requires
Motivation
In this project I would like to address the time changes that happening in Kuala
Lumpur city. Time is always an interesting topic to study all about, time itself form
an uniqueness . Besides that, it has encouraged me to gather information from
static, which will help create some concept of idea to explore and develop.
Idea And Concept
The idea of my project is to encourage people know the beauty of Kuala Lumpur
city by the changes of the time.
My concept on this topic is to provide a video installation or documentary. This
video covers some helpful information and will help you to visualize.
4. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Time-lapse photography
Time-lapse photography is a technique whereby the frequency at which film frames
are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that used to view the sequence.
When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing.
For example, an image of a scene may be captured once every second, then played
back at 30 frames per second. The result is an apparent 30-times speed increase.
Time-lapse photography can be considered the opposite of high speed photography
or slow motion.
5. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Video Art
Video art is a type of art which relies on moving pictures and comprises video. Video
art came into existence during the late 1960s and early 1970s as the new technology
became available outside corporate broadcasting and is still widely practiced and has
given rise to the widespread use of video installations.
6. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Precedent Studies - The city limits
This video had been shot this time-lapse montage from late 2010 through early
2011. This video has taken one year to finish up the whole thing .The artist goal was
to show the duality between city and nature.
7. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Precedent Studies Easy way out
In this video the artist has creatively talk about the time. It shows the daily routine
that he doing, with the same activity. This show time does play a role in
every humans life.
9. IDEA AND DEVELOPMENT
The Initial Idea
At first I was thinking about doing about time management on working people by
capturing their activities on their daily life. But because of Time Management it
doesn't sound like a art student, it was more to a social science. I couldnt find more
information about this topic.
Idea Development
To improve the idea, I have change it to TIME which make me to do more research
and it and I did some observation around Jalan Ampang, around klcc. Finally I came
out with idea of recording video with all the time changes in Kuala Lumpur city.
Before I start recording, I did some observation and I found out that Time-lapse
video art can be done by using a compilation of pictures only.
10. IDEA AND DEVELOPMENT
Interval meter
Since in my project is using photography , I am going to use the interval meter as my way
of capturing images.
This interval meter is a device which counts intervals of time. An interval meter is a device
that plugs into a camera and controls how often, how long and how many shots are taken.
what i have done is
set the timer as 20 second. So it will be snapped every 20 second and the will be collected
the sequences of the image into the hard disk.
11. IDEA AND DEVELOPMENT
Observation
A few weeks back, I have went to near klcc (Kuala Lumpur City Center) area, which is
the main highlight for Kuala Lumpur city.
I went did some observation on kl city. I found out the movement of the clouds that
reflected the klcc is quit interesting.
Beside that , I did observe how does the people activities.
I found some interesting, the movement of the lights at the nights on the buildings.
12. CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
Geographical
Time itself is a general is a general thing, in which space includes all forms. A common
theme is the study of the geographies of the past and how a place or region changes
through time. Many historical geographers study geographical patterns through
time, including how people have interacted with their environment, and created the
cultural landscape. geographic information system that may display, store and
analyze data of past geographies and track changes in time. The place that I have
choose is Kuala Lumpur city.
Social Context
social context refers to the immediate physical and social setting in which people live
or in which something happens or develops. Time is something that happens and
giving a lot of changes in daily life's.
13. CONTENT DEVELOPMENT
A few weeks back, I have went to near klcc (Kuala Lumpur City Center) area.
There are few images that I inspire me in so many ways. I tried to call to mind
the pictures that I should find out.
Besides that snap picture from near housing area, to get the far view of kl city.
14. CONTENT DEVELOPMENT
Experimental with software
* I have determined to do the greater part of my work in After Effects. The
conception of my time based piece is centered on the organization visual elements
of the sequences of image.
*I did an experiment on how to connect make the time lapse into a sequences.
*This experiment is done without any tutorials, simply because I wanted to find out
whether this method is working or not .
*So, the development is very quiet turn out well. The 4 hours picture that have
collect its turn out once created in video is only 4 second.
