Technology such as television, texting, social media, and the internet has contributed to a decrease in literacy skills. Research shows that excessive television watching is linked to poor school performance and behavior issues in students. Texting promotes the misuse of grammar and vocabulary in students as evidenced by lower scores on grammar tests. Social media encourages poor writing habits and isolates users, reducing opportunities to practice literacy. The internet decreases critical thinking and distracts attention from the real world. Reading print material enhances imagination more than visual media.
