2. Photography The main focus of the arts in the civil war was photography. A popular photographer at the time was Matthew Brady. Brady took pictures of battlefields, camps, soldiers, and war generals. Lots of his photographs were in newspapers.
3. Alexander Gardner Alexander Gardner was another famous photographer in the Civil War. Gardner worked frequently with Matthew Brady. He photographed the Army of the Potomac, The Battle of Culpepper, and the Second Battle of Bull Run. In 1863, Gardner published The Catalogue of Photographic Incidents of the Civil War, which contained all of the photographs he had taken.
4. Union Music Union soldiers preferred to listen and sing to patriotic and sentimental songs. Favorite songs among the soldiers included The Battle Cry of Freedom, John Brown¡¯s Body, Just Before the Battle Mother, The Vacant Chair, and Dixie¡¯s Land.
5. Confederate Music Confederate soldiers enjoyed listening and singing to patriotic and romantic music . Favorite songs among the soldiers included : Bonnie Blue Flag, Maryland My Maryland, The Battle Cry of Freedom, and Lorena.
6. Literature Books and newspapers had a strong impact on the lives of people during the Civil War. For example, Uncle Tom¡¯s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, revealed how horribly slaves were treated by their masters. The book turned many people against slavery.
7. Harper¡¯s Weekly Harper¡¯s Weekly was a very popular and powerful newspaper during the Civil War. The newspaper contained articles about recent battles, deaths of soldiers, and many pictures of battlefields and soldiers. The newspaper kept many people up to date with the war.
