Born in 1947, President Megawati, is the daughter of the charismatic General Sukarno, who led the struggle against Dutch colonial rule and became founding president of an independent Indonesia. President Megawati reluctantly entered politics at the age of 40 to oppose the authoritarian regime of former President Suharto. She was vice president and then president of Indonesia after her predecessor, President Abdurrahman Wahid, was impeached for alleged corruption and incompetence. Serving as president from 2001 to 2004, Megawati inherited a country experiencing deep economic hardship and sectarian conflict. Her most notable contribution was improving political stability. She became the first female president of Indonesia, a country which has the world’s largest Muslim population. Indonesia, which comprises over 13,000 islands, has a population of over 258 million, the fifth largest in the world. In addition, it has the largest economy in Southeast Asia.
