Apache Kafka in Adobe Ad Cloud's Analytics Platformconfluent
?
This document discusses Kafka in Adobe Ad Cloud's analytics platform. It provides an overview of Adobe Ad Cloud's architecture using Kafka as the data backbone. It then discusses the challenges of building exactly-once semantics in Kafka to avoid data duplication. Specifically, it covers consumer-side offset tracking, producer-side delivery guarantees through configurations like acks and retries, and having producers and consumers cooperate to achieve exactly-once processing.
Paul Byrom is the Head of Quality at News International. He was tasked with reducing the risk of failures from load testing without high costs or impact. Previously, load testing at News International was too expensive to run live-like tests using LoadRunner. They moved to using the open source Jmeter tool on Amazon Web Services (AWS) which allowed for unlimited virtual users at a much lower cost. For example, a test that would have cost ?1.2 million on LoadRunner only cost ?17 on Jmeter and AWS. They now perform representative load tests on their continuous integration system at minimal cost.
This document provides an overview of using Amazon AWS cloud services to implement a cost efficient, auto scaling continuous integration environment using TeamCity. It discusses setting up an AWS instance and installing TeamCity to create a basic CI server. It then covers creating agents, scaling the number of agents to handle more build jobs, and various conclusions about using Spot Instances and other instance types to further reduce costs over time. The document is intended to demonstrate how to prototype a CI solution using free AWS resources and auto scaling capabilities to improve throughput and efficiency.
One of the key characteristics of serverless components is the pay-per-use pricing model. For example, with AWS Lambda, you don¡¯t pay for the uptime of the underlying infrastructure but for the no. of invocations and how long your code actually runs for.
This important characteristic removes the need for many premature micro-optimizations as your cost is always tightly linked to usage and minimizes waste. As a result, many applications would run at a fraction of the cost if they were moved to serverless.
The pay-per-use pricing model also enables more accurate cost prediction and monitoring based on your application¡¯s throughput. This gives rise to the notion of FinDev, where finance and development can intersect and allows optimization to be targeted to give the optimal return-on-invest on the engineering efforts.
And by building your application on serverless components, you can also leverage it as a business advantage and offer a more competitive, usage-based pricing to your customers. Which is going to be crucial at a time when businesses all around the world are affected by COVID and are looking for better efficiencies.
In this webinar, we will cover topics such as:
- How does the cost of serverless differ from serverful applications?
- How to predict and monitor cost in serverless applications?
- When should you optimize for cost?
- How can you leverage usage-based pricing as a business advantage?
In this session, we will look at 10 common use cases for AWS Lambda such as REST APIs, WebSockets, IoT and building event-driven systems. We will also touch on some of the latest platform features such as Provisioned Concurrency, EFS integration and Lambda Destinations and when and where we should use them.
The document discusses cloud services and why developers should build them. It defines cloud services using examples like Amazon S3 for file storage and New Relic for performance monitoring. These services take over infrastructure headaches like scaling by running software as hosted, managed services where the provider handles operations and maintenance in exchange for usage-based fees. The document argues the cloud services market is emerging and offers exciting opportunities to develop new offerings.

"Cloud" computing provides significant advantages and enormous cost savings by allowing IT infrastructure to be provisioned as a ubiquitous, metered, unit priced and on demand service. However, the other major resourcing issue faced by CIO¡¯s is the provision of skilled labour to develop, support and maintain a increasing wide range of IT applications.
This session will show attendees how the worldwide pool of freelance developers, the "Crowd", can be utilised as a ubiquitous, metered, unit priced and on demand resource pool to work in the "Cloud" to improve responsiveness to customer demands, reduce development timeframes and achieve significant cost savings.
Although the crowd can bring enormous benefits in terms of cost and agility, there are some technical and business barriers to adoption in large organisations. This presentation will discuss the barriers and, using some real examples, will explain how GoSource overcomes them.

Microservices: What's Missing - O'Reilly Software Architecture New YorkAdrian Cockcroft
?
The document discusses microservices architecture and related challenges. It provides advice on failure injection testing, versioning and routing, protocols and interfaces, timeouts and retries, managing inconsistency, denormalized data models, and cloud native monitoring of microservices. The author emphasizes designing services to fail independently, incremental versioning, avoiding unproductive work from retries, and dealing with the inherent inconsistency of distributed systems.
This document provides an overview of architecting microservices using .NET. It discusses why microservices are used, common architecture patterns, and implementation considerations. Key points include:
- Independent, loosely coupled services that are fault tolerant and easy to scale are goals of a microservices architecture.
- Communication between services should be kept simple, using either synchronous HTTP or asynchronous messaging. Synchronous calls can lead to temporal coupling so circuit breakers and failure handling are important.
- Domain-driven design principles like bounded contexts and separating queries from commands (CQRS) can help define appropriate service boundaries and responsibilities.
- Event sourcing avoids shared state and two-phase commits by persisting a sequence of events rather than
1. The cloud provides on-demand access to computing resources like servers, storage, databases, and applications over the internet.
2. Using the cloud provides flexibility, security, and enables innovation by allowing easy scaling of resources and focusing on building applications rather than infrastructure.
3. The cloud reduces the need for companies to purchase their own hardware and maintain their own data centers, instead paying only for the resources they use on a pay-as-you-go model.

While everyone is talking about ¡®stateless¡¯ services as a way to achieve scalability and high availability, the truth is that they are about as real as the unicorns. Building applications and services that way simply pushes the problem further down the stack, which only makes it worse and more difficult to solve (although, on the upside, it might make it somebody else¡¯s problem). This is painfully obvious when building microservices, where each service must truly own its state.
The reality is that you don¡¯t need ¡®stateless¡¯ services to either scale out or be fault tolerant ¡ª what you really need is a scalable, fault tolerant state management solution that you can build your services around.
In this talk we will discuss how some of the popular microservices frameworks are tackling this problem, and will look at technologies available today that make it possible to build scalable, highly available systems without ¡®stateless¡¯ service layers, whether you are building microservices or good ol¡¯ monoliths.
Cloud Native: Designing Change-tolerant Softwarecornelia davis
?
Delivered at Interop ITX 2017: http://info.interop.com/itx/2017/scheduler/session/cloud-native-designing-change-tolerant-software
Cloud-native applications are characterized by highly distributed topologies consisting of many relatively small components (yup, usually called microservices). But the thing that sets them apart from the previous generation of apps is that they are expected to function flawlessly even while the environment they are running in is constantly changing, or even failing. All of this requires applying a new set of design patterns and practices and this session will introduce the key ones. The Twelve Factor App (12factor.net) is a high-level articulation of some of these techniques that you may well have heard of, but its descriptions are relatively dense and the industry knowledge has evolved a fair bit since its publication.
Cornelia Davis will go through the best practices for cloud-native applications and clear some of the mystery that shrouds 12-factor today. At the conclusion, attendees will understand what is needed for cloud-native applications, as well as why and how to deliver on those requirements.

The building has stopped shaking, build some stairs! Where are we on realising this hybrid vision? One guys take on where we are, based on success and failure towards "true hybrid cloud". Developer Experience is Dead! Long Live Developer Experience!
In this keynote-style session, we¡¯ll take a detailed, granular look at the barriers to productivity developers face today and modern approaches for removing them. 10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, ¡®The Coding War Games.¡¯
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method, we invent to deliver products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches works? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today so we don¡¯t have the same discussion again in a decade?
