TowerLabs: Accelerating Adoption of Green Building Technologies for CondosToronto 2030 District
油
Jamie James, Founder of TowerLabs @ MaRS showcases some of their research and the technology they are incubating to accelerate the uptake of cleantech in the condo sector.
Modern technologies nowadays require more electrical power. We can upgrade your panel, add breakers to an existing one, or install a sub-panel. Older homes electrical systems cant always cope with the increasing demand for more electricity. Panel upgrade (or Heavy Up) means increasing the amperage coming into your house, so that your electrical system can receive and handle an increased load.
Hi-Tech was contracted to provide shop drawings for a boiler supporting structure in the UAE. They modeled the structure in Tekla after receiving the initial Staad model from the client's design firm. This required adjusting member locations and dealing with revisions as design progressed. The 55m tall tower structure with a boiler mass at the top presented stability challenges under earthquake loads. Hi-Tech delivered general arrangement, assembly, and part drawings over 5 months to help expedite installation. They employed quality processes including self-checks, peer reviews, and audits to deliver the project outputs on time.
Efficient and Affordable: Applying the Passive House Standard to Low-income, ...energytrustor

This document provides details about the Orchards at Orenco affordable housing project in Oregon, which aimed to be the first certified Passive House apartments in the state. It discusses the owner's goals of providing affordable, healthy, and energy-efficient housing. It outlines the integrated design process used by the project team, including energy modeling. Key aspects covered include the building envelope design, window and door selections, lighting and appliances, HVAC design, and construction process. Actual energy performance data showed the building achieved over 50% savings compared to code.
This document discusses the design and construction of the University of Chicago Campus North Residence Hall project. It provides introductions to the project team members and describes the integrated design-build project delivery and BIM/IPD processes used. The project faced challenges with team collaboration, communication, developing scope and managing changes to meet energy goals. However, through integrated planning and an accelerated schedule, the team was able to coordinate systems by the end of design development.

This document provides details about an architecture, engineering, and construction project to create BIM models for a 6-story building in California. It discusses the client, a large construction firm, and the project details. It then describes the challenges in modeling the structure based on limited drawings, solving issues with basement dimensions, and coordinating the architectural, structural, and MEP models. The process took 6 weeks to create Revit models and perform clash detection. Quality control processes were followed and the outputs included 3D rendered views, plans, and sections of the BIM models.

Sustainable Communities and Net-Zero Energy: Municipal Incentives That Actual...Derek Satnik
油
This presentation summarizes a broad national study done in Canada on how cities can effectively enable developers to build net-zero communities. This study focused on which technologies to use, how to invest in them, and how to get innovative projects approved through municipal processes.
The study was a partnership between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM, through their Green Municipal Fund, GMF) and eight developers from four medium-sized Canadian cities to observe three basic concepts:
-1- The technical feasibility of achieving net-zero energy communities at the eight projects;
-2- The financial feasibility of building such projects;
-3- The process feasibility to obtain government approval of projects and all required permits.

Performance Testing in the Agile LifecycleLee Barnes
油
Traditional large scale end-of-cycle performance tests served enterprises well in the waterfall era. However, as organizations transition to agile development models, many find their tried and true approach to performance testingand their performance testing resourcesbecoming somewhat irrelevant. The strict requirements and lengthy durations just dont fit in the context of an agile cycle. Additionally, investigating system performance at the end of the development effort misses out on the early stage feedback offered by an agile approach. And its more important than ever that todays agile-built systems perform. So how can agile organizations ensure optimum performance of their business critical systems? Lee Barnes discusses why agile teams need to change their thinking about performance from a narrow focus on testing to a broader focus on analysisfrom a people, process and technology perspective. Take back techniques for shifting your performance testing/analysis earlier in the development cycle and extracting performance data that is immediately actionable.

We'll first explore how to Transition from O11 to ODC with Solange Ferreira (OutSystems). After that, Remco Dekkinga (Evergreen IT) will jump into Troubleshooting.
Chapter 1 of Computer Organization and Architecture by Patterson and Hennessy, often referred to as the "Computer Organization and Design" (COD) book, serves as an introduction to the fundamental concepts of computer systems. It lays the groundwork for understanding how computers are designed and how they operate at both the hardware and software levels. The chapter begins by explaining the importance of abstraction in computer design, highlighting how layers of abstraction simplify the complexity of modern computing systems. Abstraction allows designers and programmers to focus on specific levels of a system without needing to understand every detail of the underlying layers, making it easier to build, optimize, and maintain complex systems.
The authors introduce the concept of the stored-program computer, a revolutionary idea where instructions and data are stored in memory, and the CPU fetches, decodes, and executes these instructions. This forms the basis of the von Neumann architecture, a cornerstone of modern computing. The von Neumann model is characterized by its sequential execution of instructions and its unified memory space for both data and programs. The chapter explains how this architecture enables the flexibility and programmability that define modern computers.
The chapter also discusses the roles of key components in a computer system, such as the CPU (Central Processing Unit), memory, and I/O (Input/Output) devices, and how they interact to execute programs. The CPU is described as the brain of the computer, responsible for performing arithmetic and logical operations, while memory stores data and instructions temporarily or permanently. I/O devices facilitate communication between the computer and the external world, enabling input from users and output to displays or other peripherals.
A significant portion of the chapter is dedicated to the concept of performance in computer systems. The authors introduce metrics like response time (the time it takes to complete a task) and throughput (the number of tasks completed per unit of time). They explain how these metrics are influenced by hardware and software optimizations, such as faster processors, larger memory, and efficient algorithms. The chapter also touches on the trade-offs involved in improving performance, such as the cost, power consumption, and complexity of hardware components.
The chapter emphasizes the importance of instruction set architecture (ISA), which serves as the interface between hardware and software. The ISA defines the set of instructions that a CPU can execute, as well as the registers, memory addressing modes, and data types it supports. Understanding the ISA is crucial for both hardware designers, who implement it, and software developers, who write programs that run on it.
To illustrate these concepts, the chapter often uses real-world examples and analogies, making the material accessible to readers with varying levels of prior knowledge.

Platform engineering is the foundation of modern software development, equipping teams with the tools and workflows they need to move faster. However, to truly drive impact, platform engineers must think like product managersleveraging productivity metrics to guide decisions, prioritize investments, and measure success. By applying a data-driven approach, platform teams can optimize developer experience, streamline workflows, and demonstrate tangible ROI on platform initiatives.
In this 15-minute session, Justin Reock, Deputy CTO at DX (getdx.com), will explore how platform engineers can use key developer productivity metricssuch as cycle time, deployment frequency, and developer satisfactionto manage their platform as an internal product. By treating the platform with the same rigor as an external product launch, teams can accelerate adoption, improve efficiency, and create a frictionless developer experience.

Java has had a tremendous success and, in the last few years, has evolved quite significantly. However, it was still difficult to interface with libraries written in other programming language because of some complexity with JNI and some syntactic and semantic barriers. New projects to improve Java could help alleviate, even nullify, these barriers. Projects Panama, Valhalla, and Babylon exist to make it easier to use different programming and memory models in Java and to interface with foreign programming languages. This presentation describes the problem with the Java isthmus and the three projects in details, with real code examples. It shows how, combined, these three projects could make of Java the new Python.
