The film industry- Research activity
 What are the careers available in film production?
 What skills and knowledge are required of those roles?
 How and why has the film industry changed over time? (new
technologies, the way we consume media, diversity, issues that have
forced change)
 How has this presented new opportunities?

 Which three career roles in the industry are you most interested in
and why?
 What are the similarities and differences between the skillsets and
knowledge required for those roles?
 How do your skills/knowledge relate to those roles?
The Film Industry is split
into these categories:
 Indie Film industry
 Big budget features
 British Film Industry
 International film industries
Those Industries have job roles that fit within
these categories:
 Management
They co-ordinate people to achieve the goals
of the production. They lead, direct, organise
and drive teams.
 Creative
They work to innovate, problem solve and
come up with new ideas. These jobs usually
involve some form of artistic ability and
vision
 Editorial
They prepare materials for either broadcast or
distribution. These types of jobs are usually in
post-production. The types of things they
might prepare could include video footage,
special effects,
The TV and film industry have job roles that fit
within these categories:
 Technical
They work using technology, often in the production
process. Usually technical roles involve applying
production techniques.
 Research
People in these type of roles usually investigate for the
purpose of production. These roles often take place in
pre-production. Their role is an important one for
proving new ideas work and establishing audiences.
 Financial
People in these roles control the budgets, money and
assets of the production.
The TV and film industry have job roles that fit
within these categories:
 Organisational
They work to ensure everything is planned and
prepared for production. They manage people
and sometimes props, transport and other areas
of production to make sure that everything is
brought together and completed in time for the
deadline.
 Administrative
They also work to organise business operations
but often in more of a data driven capacity, using
paperwork and organisation to bring together all
of the processes (e.g. making sure that the
finances are distributed to the production staff
for pay)
Give 2 examples of careers for each of the

Now compare and discuss the skillsets and
knowledge of those careers for each subsector and
why it is important to have those skills/knowledge.

 What events, additional training or experiences will you have that will
give you the advantage over other candidates?
 How long will it take you to get to a professional level and why?
Research activity-
 Choose your favourite career path and find an example of a
professional that does that career.
Using your professional practitioner look at:
 Their skillset and knowledge
 Why they are so brilliant in their field
 What they do day to day as part of their job
 Challenges they face as part of their career
 Advantages they have as someone who excels in their field
 How do you compare to a professional in your chosen field? What do
you need to do to advance your skillset and knowledge?
 What does their experience tell you about the industry?
Assignment 1- Use your brief to piece together
your research and write an academic report which
covers:
 An evaluation of the evolution of the creative media production
industry
 A comparative review of different career roles in the industry and
examples of the skills sets and knowledge required whilst drawing
comparisons between them.
 A review of a practitioner in the field you wish to pursue
 Evaluate your skills and knowledge in relation to your chosen
profession and discuss how you intend to develop your skills in
preparation for your career.
