Why I chose this career?
When I chose my subjects for my A-
levels, Computer Science was top of my
list. During my A-levels, I discovered the
true power of this incredible science
and how it is has helped shaped the
world as we know it today and how it will
continue to contribute to the future.
Choosing this field as a career was
merely a matter of time and of course
getting to university.
Once in university, my lecturers as well
as friends helped me discover more and
I plunged more and more in it to the
extent that today I cannot see myself in
any other field.
This field offers incredible opportunities
and will allow me to be at the fore front
of technological developments.
What motivates me?
Challenges, pressure and the will to
always be better motivate me most.
I have never shied away from taking up
challenges, whether academic life or
extra-curricular one. Those challenges
have helped shaped the present day
ME. I have failed many times but I have
learnt from those and risen up to be
better.
I always tend to work best under
pressure and in time I have grown to
harness this ability and turn it to my
advantage. Over the years at the
university, I have learnt to keep calm in
tense situations and extract the best
possible outcomes.
The will to better myself and the work I
am undertaking has made people tag
me as a ‘perfectionist’. It is a tag I relish
since I believe that the world need more
of such kinds of attitude.
Things that I do that I like most @
Work…
Programming was never something
which I relished doing but ever since
working on my Final Year Project and
seeing the ‘power of programming’ first
hand at Silverlake – it has been
something which I have particularly
liked. Being in an organization which
specializes in developing applications,
this gave me the opportunity to enhance
my skills and understand this industry
better. So today, I can proudly say that
my skills in PHP, HTML5, Javascript as
well as MySql are much better. I have
even tried my hand at designing
Android interfaces in XML which was
something new and which I would like
to take further in the future.
I need more training and re-skilling
@ work on…
Here also I would mention programming
since I have seen first-hand how ‘tech
jobs’ are in demand and would like to be
better at the above mentioned
programming languages as well as
getting to grasp with Java – something
which I have struggled since my
semesters at university. Java would
have helped me to contribute more
towards Android development at work.
I would add that time management,
communications skills and decision
making are things which must be
continuously improved upon. I am today
better than during the last year but there
is scope to become better still and
improve all my overall skills.
About My Job…
The team of INTI students here were
tasked to create an Android application
to store and manage complaints for
businesses in Malaysia.
My job during the 16 weeks which I
spent at Silverlake consisted of two
things. Firstly, helping my team
members in designing the Android
interfaces and researching on how the
features and functions we wanted could
be implemented. Secondly, I worked on
the web part of the application which
involved creating the Administrator
control panel as well as the portal for
the merchant/business to interact with
the consumers.
These jobs enabled me to try my hands
at new things and learn the ‘industry
way’, which we are not taught in class,
from the professionals of the business.
These opened my eyes to incredible
new possibilities which I intend to
perfect to be work ready.
Work Challenges…
The biggest challenge which I faced
during those 16 weeks was to stay
motivated. The reason for this being
that I travelled every day from Nilai to
Damansara and the journey itself could
knock the stuffing out of you! Coming to
work on time and getting work done was
important. Laziness can never be an
option in the working world and I learnt
this first hand.
Secondly, my skills set from my 3 years
at university did not make me work
ready for the job at hand. Developing an
Android application which makes use of
JSON, servlets, Apache Tomcat
servers as well as MySQL Workbench
were all new things. Even my skills in
PHP and HTML5 were basic at best.
The whole team thus took more time
that required to understand those new
concepts and then only we could work.
My Unforgettable Moment…
I cannot pin-point one unforgettable moment during my internship period. On the
contrary I can say that the whole period was a very good experience for me. I
learnt new things, worked with hardworking people, improved on my skills and I
can definitely say that I am more work ready that 16 weeks ago.
I have today a better idea of the direction I want to give my career in this industry.
My ADVICE to YOU…
As advice, I would say that wherever you get the opportunity to intern, seize it
with both hands. Take the time to learn and make your weeks there worthwhile
and not a waste of time. Things may become frustrating but we alone have the
possibility to better that. Work hard; be respectful; be disciplined. And let your
talent speak for yourself!
