Programs of the
Center for
Innovation
The founding principal of Middle School 322 in New York City,
Erica Zigelman, served in the position for 17 years. After
retiring from her 40-year career with the New York City
Department of Education, Erica Zigelman transitioned into a
role as an educational and leadership consultant with the
Center for Innovation (CEI).
The CEI teaches construction and design thinking principles
and how both can apply to organizations across diverse
industries. To maximize the number of people who can
benefit from the training, the CEI hosts two webinars monthly,
each about a specific design thinking topic. Instead of
requiring membership or sponsorship to view the seminars, it
posts them to its YouTube channel. Each webinar lasts about
an hour and concludes with a question-and-answer period
between the viewers and speakers.
The CEI hosts its Innovation Lab from June through November
each year to cater to organizations that want to implement
lasting systemic change. Students consist of teams from for-
profit corporations and nonprofit organizations. They learn
how to gather the data needed to inform their project,
create actionable ideas and prototypes, and explain the
result to a broader audience.
When each group of students joins, they pose a problem that
needs solving and frame their work during the six modules
around it. In addition to virtual instruction from CEI personnel,
students gain access to written materials and guidelines
corresponding to each module, which they can keep after
receiving their Innovation Lab certification.
