The Progressive Era was a period of reform between 1890-1920 in the United States. Many reforms were enacted at all levels of government to address problems that had arisen from rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization. The Progressive movement grew out of earlier reform efforts and started at the local level before expanding. Progressives believed that government should work to improve lives and that private charities were not enough. They advocated for social, political, economic, and moral reforms. Both local and state governments enacted changes like establishing labor departments and restricting child labor. Under President Roosevelt, federal reforms addressed issues like railroad regulation, public health, and workers' rights.
