TO ENCOURAGE/ENHANCE COMMUNICATION
what could we change?
design rationale
*
the ISSUE
The house is one of the only places a
family is constantly together, yet the
physical structure of the house at
times discourages communication
instead.
This is because factors such as doors
inadvertently create both physical and
metaphorical walls between the
members.
design rationale
*
the DOOR
Already has multiple, universal signals
(i.e. locked means need for privacy,
open means available, etc.)
Likewise, has a unique language of
communication of its own. One that
requires no previous instruction; easy
to use.

key features
The doors main feature is its smart
glass. The glass contains technology
that allows it to switch between states
of opaque and clear.
The change is manipulated by a
simple switch at the handle of the door
and can only be adjusted from the
inside of the room.
clear & opaque
design concept
*
key features
Not straying too far from the traditional
door, nusm retains the integral feature
of the beloved entryway.
nusm provides in addition to this
function, simple means of
manipulation(can be only done inside
the room) and effortlessly display the
status of the door.

INSIDE OUTSIDE
BENEFITS - Change between modes: locked and
neutral
- Alternate between clear and opaque
= customization of doors accessibility
- Have easy view of occupants availability
when allowed
- Know when lights of the room are turned
on and off; another show of availability
EFFECT - No surprises as to who comes to the door
when clear
- Non-verbal nudge encouraging welcoming
communication between members
- Open aesthetics; alleviates claustrophobia
and mental stress
- Smart glass can lower costs of heat or
air-conditioning in in the respective seasons
- Non-verbal nudge
- Easy indicator of availability
- Open aesthetics; house seems larger
with the equal diffusion of light; alleviates
