PlanetRead is an organization that provides support to social entrepreneurs like Brij Kothari from India. Kothari created the Same Language Subtitling (SLS) plan to address illiteracy. SLS involves subtitling television programs in the same language as the audio to provide reading practice to viewers. Kothari implemented SLS for songs on Indian television beginning in 1999. Completing the school would allow us to:
Establish the first model support school for hearing impaired in Delhi with all world class facilities
Hire more quality teachers and counselors thereby increasing our student intake capability manifold.
Currently we have approximately 100 children coming to us for classes with 4 teachers on our staff.
Target is to increase our intake to atleast 250 children initially and grow on an annual basis.
Create resource center for other NGOs to learn about quality education for hearing impaired
Enable increased training to mainstream school teachers for bringing in inclusive environment
Make the Government policies more disabled friendly
Provide equal opportunities to hearing impaired to develop and succeed.
So far, we have constructed one floor of the school and need 50 Lakh INR to complete the second floor. I started the fund collection campaign (www.ketto.org/suniye) recently with friends and family who have known me personally and have been inspired by my upbringing and hence believe in the Suniye story. 1) There are approximately 5 million people with hearing impairment in India, with 9% being children aged 0-6. Suniye is a non-profit organization established in 1995 to help hearing impaired children through education and support.

We have been running a support school totally free of charge for hearing impaired children, which encourages inclusive education and helps in developing speech and language.
We are one of the very few institutions in Delhi teaching spoken language as opposed to sign language to these children.
Over the last 20 years, we have helped thousands of students - almost 90% of them come from low income backgrounds - who have all gone on to do well in life.
All donations to the society are exempted u/s 80 G of the Income Tax Act as per order no DIT(E)/2011-2012/S-1828/3664 dated 16.11.2011 of the Director of Income Tax (Exemptions), Delhi - 110092.
We are also registered to accept foreign contributions under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976 vide No. 231650952.

Completing the school would allow us to:
Establish the first model support school for hearing impaired in Delhi with all world class facilities
Hire more quality teachers and counselors thereby increasing our student intake capability manifold.
Currently we have approximately 100 children coming to us for classes with 4 teachers on our staff.
Target is to increase our intake to atleast 250 children initially and grow on an annual basis.
Create resource center for other NGOs to learn about quality education for hearing impaired
Enable increased training to mainstream school teachers for bringing in inclusive environment
Make the Government policies more disabled friendly
Provide equal opportunities to hearing impaired to develop and succeed.
So far, we have constructed one floor of the school and need 50 Lakh INR to complete the second floor. I started the fund collection campaign (www.ketto.org/suniye) recently with friends and family who have known me personally and have been inspired by my upbringing and hence believe in the Suniye story. The University of Michigan launched a campaign in 2013 to translate some of its open educational health videos into multiple languages to make them more accessible globally. Over 50 volunteers translated over 140 caption tracks for 31 videos, covering 12 languages. He has been on the Faculty of IIM Ahmedabad , as Associate and Adjunct Professor, since 1996. In 1999, in an effort to improve functional literacy rates in India, he experimented with subtitles television program. In 2002, the Doordarshan network subtitled their national program. Since 2006, His work was also selected by the Google as one of the projects for funding.

This method of subtitling is used by national television broadcasters in India. This idea was struck upon by Brij Kothari, who believed that SLS makes reading practice an incidental, automatic, and subconscious part of popular TV entertainment, at a low per-person cost to shore up Literacy rates of India.

Print-exposure with text-sound association for pre-reading children Before After SLS SLS Every US dollar spent on subtitling a nationally telecast program of Hindi film songs, gives 30 minutes of weekly reading practice to 10,000 people, for a whole year! SLS has been implemented on one weekly program each in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Marathi. The main goal is to persuade broadcasting policy in India to immplement SLS on all songs on TV, in all languages.
