You and your fellow travelers have been shipwrecked on a mysterious island. In the first part, you discuss with your group how you ended up stranded and your relationships with the other survivors. In the second part, you explore the island to determine if it is inhabited and what resources are available to you. In the third part, you decide on a plan of action to search for food, build shelter, and explore further in order to survive. You establish duties and begin to document your experiences in a journal in case of rescue or creating a story.

Survival
Castaways, part one
You have been shipwrecked! Picture the scene you have just woken up and found
yourself lying on the beach. You look around you and see some fellow travellers who
have also been washed ashore. You start remembering what happened.
In your groups, discuss how this happened? Where were you travelling to? How did you
end up on the island? What is your relationship with the other survivors?
Castaways, part two
So, what is this island like? Are there any signs of life or does it appear to be
uninhabited? What raw materials are available? What objects, if any, have washed up on
the beach with you and are they usable?
Castaways, part three
You need a plan of action! Together decide what your priorities are and who is going to
do what. Use the ideas below, but you can add other things to do if you think there is
something more important!
find food build a fire make a shelter
explore the island arm yourselves build a raft
try to send a message asking for help make peace with the natives
2. The Journal
You have now been on the island for one week. You have called a meeting to decide
what to do next. Each of you should report to the others what you have been doing, what
success, if any, you have had with the jobs you had to do.
* * *
You decide to keep a journal to record your adventures. If the worst happens, it will let
anyone who finds it in years to come know what happened to you. Or maybe if you get
off the island soon you can turn your journal into a bestseller and sell the rights to Disney
or Warner Brothers!
Each member of your group should write up one day of the journal: Day One, Day Two,
Day Three etc. Each day should be approx 180 -220 words.
The Presentation
Youve made it back to civilization! Congratulations! Decide together how you were
rescued / how you made it back, then get ready you will be attending a press
conference where lots of journalists are waiting to hear about your amazing adventures
very, very soon!
Each of you should talk about a different part of your stay on the island eg how we got
there / how we organised ourselves / what we discovered / the problems we faced / how
we got off the island or day one / day two etc. Be prepared to answer any questions the
journalists have for you!
