1) The study investigated the role of TNF-alpha and the protein sharpin on osteoclast function and formation using genetically modified mice that were deficient in either TNF or sharpin.
2) Results showed a significant decrease in osteoclast number and gene expression of markers for osteoclasts and apoptosis in mice deficient in either TNF or sharpin compared to controls.
