Puerto Rico was acquired by the United States from Spain after the Spanish-American War of 1898. The U.S. wanted control of Puerto Rico to gain new markets, raw materials, and labor as well as to retaliate against Spain for the sinking of the USS Maine which the U.S. blamed on Spain. Under U.S. rule, Puerto Rico was granted limited self-government and American citizenship for its residents.
5. U.S. control on Puerto Rico
• The U.S. wanted to control Puerto Rico for
these two reasons:
 It had the new markets, raw materials, and
cheaper labor that the U.S. greatly needed for
production
 The U.S. blamed the Spanish government for
the explosion of the USS Maine because of a
floating mine while in Cuba
