- 2. In 2014, comedian Hannibal Buress described Bill Cosby as a rapist in a joke that went viral. Women had been making rape and sexual assault allegations against Cosby since 2000, but it had not yet hit the mainstream. As the story came out, I looked away for a time. My parents had been big Bill Cosby fans, laughing at his albums and referring to me in utero as "Junior Barnes". I became a Bill Cosby fan watching the HBO special, "Himself". My son became a Bill Cosby fan, attending his first concert when Cosby appeared at the Puyallup Fair. Listening to MP3s together we memorized his routines. I kept a copy of his book Fatherhood on the shelf with my favorite clowning books.
- 3. And then the (nearly 60) accusations kept coming. I took the book off the shelf and considered throwing it in the trash. Or burning it. Or defacing it in some way. It wasn't until I read a 2015 article in New York magazine, "35 Bill Cosby Accusers Tell Their Stories" that I realized what I could do. The only socio-political statement would be to share these stories, so I edited down the stories to about 5 sentences each to match the number of pages in Fatherhood. Then I asked women to write the words in the book. I asked women I knew well and was surprised by the diverse response. Some women were firmly committed to the project, and some were clearly unwilling to either sit in judgment or re-experience trauma. Some women tried to suggest I take the project in a different direction. For example, I could have interviewed 35 rapists who had drugged their victims. No, thank you.
- 4. As the project continued, I began to ask women I did not know very well or had not seen in years, and I even posted an Ask on the Buy Nothing Olympia page for participants. Soon I was shuttling the book across town and across state lines. It was cathartic and empowering for the participants. The idea for the pedestal grew from the idea that I wanted to constrict the book to a fixed location for Arts Walk. I also wanted to keep the book above the height of small children. My son is now 13 years old, and I want him to understand that sex can be a thrilling, lovely, and passionate activity... between consenting adults. Being rich and famous does not give one the right to deceive, drug, and rape a partner. Pull Cosby Off (the Pedestal), and read the stories of 35 survivors. You may want to wear gloves. It's a dirty book, and you may find yourself soiled. Justin Wright is also known as Olympia's own Jusby the Clown, an award- winning clown credited with over 1400 willingly pied faces.
