2. Introduction
It is a mechanical device used to measure the oxygen
saturation in the body which means the amount of hemoglobin
in the blood carrying the oxygen
3. •Normal saturation is 95-100 in adults
•<94 considered as abnormal
•<90 is worrying issue
6. Working Principle
It has red (R) and Infrared (IR) light emitting LED’s and a
photo detector. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more IR light
and Deoxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more red light.
11. Uses
1. Used in Operation Room
2. ICU
3. Wards
4. Emergency department
5. Cardiac catheterization units
6. Delivery rooms
12. Common Factors affecting measurement of
oxygen saturation
1. Blood pressure less than 80 mmhg is difficult to assess
(should always be more than 80mmhg)
2. Vascular impingement
3. AV fistula
4. Compression by the probe
5. Cardiac arrest
6. Heart rate extremes (> 200 or <30)
13. Specific Factors affecting measurement of
oxygen saturation
Falsely High SPO2
• presence of abnormal Hb
• Anemia (<10)
Falsely Low SPO2
• High venous pressure (CCF)
• Use of nail polish
• Skin colour
