PASSAGE 1:

mohammad has fallen into the monsoon drain

We use a Full Stop (.)

(a) at the end of a sentence
    e.g. The clock struck one.

(b) after initials
    e.g. R.K. Subramaniam

(c) for abbreviations.
     (month, time, measurements, distances, weight, subject)
      e.g. Jan. Mon. p.m, a.m , km . Maths.

        (d) for time (British English)
    e.g. 1. 30p.m.     10.20a.m.
We use a Comma (,)
(a)   to break up a long sentence
      e.g. Every morning, Pak Isa drives to market,
           buys vegetables and fish, and then goes home.

       e.g. Madam Wee went to the shop to bug pens,

           pencils, erasers and rulers.

(c)    in dialogues
       e.g. She said, Ali , dont walk on the grass.
            Father said, Take it out, Bob.
We use the Apostrophe ()
(a) to show possession
    e.g. Paul gave Toms book to his father.

(b) to replace letters which are left out in
    short forms or contractions
    e.g. Hes too far away to hear you.
         (Hes  He is)

        He doesnt like to eat carrots.
        (doesnt  does not)
          Ill let you know when the time comes.
         (Ill  I will)
We use a question mark
at the end of a question ( ? )


  e.g. Where did he go?

      Do you want to join me?

      What do you like to have for dinner ?
We use quotation marks (  )

(a) to enclose words said by a person.
    e.g. Where did he find the book? asked Helmi.


(b) to show names of books, movies etc.
     e.g. We went to see Titanic last night
Exclamation mark. (!)

We use this at the end of a sentence that
expresses strong feelings such as anger, surprise
and happiness.


e.g.   Wow ! Look at the caterpillar.
       Oh no ! It is going to rain
We use a colon (:)

(a) to show a list of things.
    e.g. Old MacDonald
         had many animals in his farm: cows,
         sheep, geese, chickens and ducks.

(b)to show the time (American system)
    e.g. 1:30 p.m. 10:20 a.m.
         (Note: In Malaysia, we follow the British

          system and use the full stop for time.)
          e.g 1.30 p.m.     10.20 a.m.
