4. 3 | Queen¡¯s Case Competition 2016
A Message from the QCC Director
September 2016
Dear Competitor,
Thank you for your participation in the 8th annual Queen¡¯s Case Competition (QCC). On behalf of
the Smith School of Business and the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.) Executive, we
are so excited to welcome you to a weekend full of challenging cases, developmental workshops, and
networking with our generous corporate sponsors.
The Queen¡¯s Case Competition was founded to provide an opportunity for Queen¡¯s Commerce
students of all years and levels of experience to come together and learn about case competitions,
as well as to improve their case preparation and presentation skills. QCC competitors come from all
sorts of different backgrounds, allowing competitors to learn from the experience, each other, and
alumni from a variety of industries who are attending the competition. One of our biggest goals is to
open new doors to future case competitions for our attendees through the relationships they foster
throughout the weekend. We hope that you can take advantage of all that the competition and other
weekend events have to offer to grow your network and hone your case skills.
QCC has grown to feature 100 competitors in two streams, the Maroon stream and the Gold stream.
The Maroon stream allows first-year students to collaborate and grow together at, what is for many,
one of their first case competitions. The Gold stream allows students in upper-years to learn from
each other through completing two cases in less than 24 hours. This year, we are especially excited
to challenge the Gold stream with a Texas Style case presentation, which will push competitors to
analyze a problem and develop a solution at depths they have most likely never explored in a case
before.
Your interest and partnership with the Queen¡¯s Case Competition is highly valued, and we cannot
wait to see the results of your hard work at this year¡¯s competition. We hope that this weekend
marks a memorable moment in your Queen¡¯s Commerce experience, and that you will choose to
return in the years to come. Best of luck!
Sincerely,
Aislin Roth

introducing you to case competitions, while also providing you with the unique opportunity to
watch the performance of outstanding upper-year competitors. For our Gold Stream competitors,
use QCC as a platform to showcase the skills you have built over your years at the Smith School of
Business.
This weekend¡¯s competition would not be possible without the continued support of the friends

8. 7 | Queen¡¯s Case Competition 2016
Texas Style Case
What is a Texas Style Case?
¡°Texas Style¡± is a unique format of case competition presentation that has been likened to a
boardroom. You will have 12 hours to complete the case. The structure is as follows:
? Three minute introduction
? 12 minutes Q&A
? Three minute conclusion
The keys to making your presentation successful are simple to learn but difficult to master: a clear and
concise introduction, a menu slide that leads judges to ask the right questions, and a Q&A strategy on
who will answer what question.
1. The Introduction
The introduction is potentially the most important part of a Texas Style presentation. In 3 minutes
you have to make sure the judges are crystal clear on what your idea is and why it¡¯s the best.
Briefly mention the problem, then jump straight into your solution. At the end of the first minute
they should know what your solution is. Dedicate the first half of minute two to a timeline or an
outline of your solution going through the key milestones, and then the last half should briefly
touch on the financials and then have a mini conclusion.
If you are lucky the judges will have followed along and when the time keeper lets the judges know
that they may start asking questions they¡¯ll have something to ask ¡ª however if they don¡¯t be
afraid to carry on. Make sure you are ready to talk about something in case no questions are asked.
Frequently the reason judges don¡¯t ask questions right after the 3 minutes is because they still have
no idea what exactly your solution is. Make sure that your 3 minute intro is a complete pitch that
can stand on it¡¯s own.
2. The Menu ºÝºÝߣ
One of the key components to your presentation will be your menu slide. This will be your master
slide and should be clickable. Try to organize it in some fashion so it¡¯s easy for you and the judges
to look at. If I have room, I like to put in questions ¡ª ¡°How much will it cost?¡± Instead of ¡°Costs¡±.
This will subtly tell the judges what questions to ask. You may even embed clickable questions
inside the slides themselves. So when you click on a slide about costs and have a line item on
insurance, the word insurance will be hyper-linked to a slide about insurance. The judges want to
ask questions that you have the answers to as it makes the presentation flow smoothly.
9. QCC Competitor Package | 8
2. Q&A Management
There are essentially two ways to answer questions in a Texas style competition:
1) You can either make sure that everyone knows which slides are theirs and have a designated
person to take questions for when you have no slide.
2) Or you can use the quarter back method, where one individual takes ALL the questions and
passes it off to other team members based on their expertise. The QB is almost like the MC, doing
the intro and the outro and directing the flow of questions. Sometimes this works better when
there are a lot of judges.
At the end of questioning you¡¯ll get 3 minutes to wrap it up. If there is an outstanding question,
answer it briefly then run through your prepared conclusion.
