Mindfulness in psychotherapy: Current issues and future research directions
There is a growing interest in mindfulness in the world of psychotherapy. It becomes apparent that it is not a mere fashionable psychotherapeutic "technique". Rather it seems to be newly defined common factor of psychotherapeutic change which may help to clarify the mechanism of psychotherapeutic change across particular approaches. Whereas during the 2000-2010 decade most of the research concerning mindfulness had focused primarily on evaluation of the effect of mindfulness-based approaches to various clinical diagnoses or to specific groups, recently the professional discussions have been showing primarily a growing interest in more general questions concerning mindfulness and also some return to the roots and an effort for broader and deeper understanding of the procedures handed down by the teachings of the Buddha. The following topics are mainly discussed: 1) what exactly is mindfulness; 2) what does the cultivation of mindfulness lead to; 3) possibilities of the measurement of mindfulness; 4) role of mindfulness in the mechanism of psychotherapeutic change; 5) what are the various ways of cultivating mindfulness etc. The paper will briefly present these topics.
