1. Railway Safety Manager
Our client is in the process of introducing an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across
their rail network and has selected an ETCS Level 1 system. The particular ATP equipment has
already been successfully proven in operational service in Europe and so is considered an ‘off-
the-shelf’ system. However, there are risks associated with the application, installation and
operation of the system in the network environment.
Key tasks:
Provide specialist capability for the consideration of safety and risk management within
assigned projects. The purpose of which is to support project management in the making of risk
based decisions and the achievement of improved safety outcomes Prepare and / or review
specialist safety risk and safety change (Safety Case) documentation that are applicable to
assigned projects. The purpose of which is to demonstrate that effective consideration /
application of relevant safety and risk issues within the project has been undertaken and to
achieve compliance with the relevant provisions of the Safety Management System
Provide specialist capability for the conduct of the full range of risk assessment related activities
and associated analysis, the purpose of which is to support project management in the making
of risk based decisions and the achievement of improved safety outcomes.
Provide specialist safety and risk consulting services to operational and project management
personnel, the purpose of which is to support and enable the achievement of effective risk
based decision making and the delivery of sound business outcomes.
Conduct Independent Verification of safety and risk reports / assessments that identify
significant safety concerns, the purpose of which is assure the consistent application of the
relevant provisions of the Safety Management System, to verify the suitability of the
methodology used and establish the validity of the conclusions and recommendations made.
Provide guided learning, mentoring and peer support to operational and project personnel in
relation to safety assurance and safety risk. The purpose of which is to progressively develop
the safety assurance and safety risk knowledge and competencies of this key management
group personnel, thereby enabling improved risk based decision making.
Experience and background:
 At least 5 years’ experience in System Safety in Rail and 5 years project experience of
ETCS
