#3: Rapporten har blivit en viktig slutprodukt i sig självt och definitionen på rapport kan variera mycket kraftigt beroende på om det rör sig om en schaktövervakning utan några egentliga fynd, eller en slutrapport över ett storskaligt mångmiljonprojekt. Utan tvekan utgör rapporterna numera en betydande andel av den arkeologiska publiceringen – kanske t o m huvuddelen sett i rent antal. Samtidigt är det en problematisk kategori som inte alltid omhändertas ordentligt av biblioteken, och vars syfte och användning vi inte känner oss helt bekväma med. Jag ska prata idag om hur rapporten används som ett medel att profilera sig på marknaden för ett uppdragsarkeologiskt kontor. Men jag kommer också vilja ta upp hur denna profilering även fungerar internt, för de anställda.
#4: På sätt och vis fungerar rapporterna som våra monument, den enda fysiskt påtagliga beviset för att vi var där, vi kom, vi såg, vi grävde – och vi dokumenterade. Precis som alla andra materiella lämningar kan de i efterhand återspegla både det som dess skapare önskade förmedla och avslöja sådant som kanske inte var helt uppenbart när det begav sig. SAU har nu funnits i drygt 12 år och det har hunnit bli en hel del rapporter under dessa år. När vi satte oss ned för att göra en retrospektiv över dem framstod tre huvudfaser i producerandet av rapporter, som hade både ekonomiska och ideologiska bevekelsegrunder. Rapporten ska fungera som ett dokument över det som har försvunnit och måste därför hålla sig inom vissa spelregler, den kan inte som annan prosa utmana konventionerna för mycket. Samtidigt är det viktigt att det fortsätter finnas ett utlopp för kreativitet och variation, eftersom alltför snäva ramar leder till stagnation även i tankeprocessen. Det här är något vi bör ha i åtanke när vi diskuterar föreskrifter och regelverk.
#5: Fas 1: Utmärktes av två viktiga stömningar: Ekonomi. Ett litet företag med få och små uppdrag måste hushålla med resurserna. Bild- och ordbehandling var fortfarande lite i sin linda dessutom. Framsidorna på rapporter gjordes i papp med utskuren öppning vilket innebar att de kunde användas på flera olika rapporter. Se oss! Märkesetableringen var viktig och gavs en hel del utrymme i några av de första större publikationerna. Vattenstämpel på sidorna i stort format. Även den svarta innehållsförteckningen var ett sätt att få läsaren att reagera när man slog upp rapporten. Ingen skulle missa att detta var SAUs produkt
#6: Fas 2: Tonårsfasen När de större projekten rullade in och fler blev anställda drog en hel del experimentlusta igång. Detta gällde innehåll och upplägg såväl som det yttre. Vilka regler var bara oreflekterade traditioner? Vad kunde göras bättre, mer effektivt, mer givande för läsaren? Förebilder hämtades i stor utsträckning från universitetsvärlden som flera kom ifrån. En stor variation i utseende, layout, typsnitt i rapporterna – humanisterna fick bryta sig fria. Rapporten skulle se intressant ut, rolig, trendig, inbjudande. Nackdelen var ett krångligt redaktionellt arbete för alla inblandade. Det förekom även mothugg från mottagarna – länsstyrelsen.
#7: En kombination av faktorer ledde fram till ökat eftertryck på en enda enhetlig grafisk profil. Dels rent arbetsmässiga och ekonomiska när firman minskade i storlek efter E4:an och det redaktionella arbetet mer lades ut externt. Dels ett nytt behov av att profilera sig tydligare gentemot den ökade konkurrensen. Det skulle gå snabbt att se att det rörde sig om en SAU-rapport Dels rent praktiskt – alla smårapporter produceras numera internt, och de flesta sitter och jobbar mot en wordmall för att minska ned på både tid och omkostnader i samband med rapportarbetet. Det ska gå snabbt, effektivt, enkelt. För de större publikationerna med mer redaktionell budget kan vi fortfarande ta ut svängarna
#8: Ingen skapar något i ett vakuum: Grunden för hur en rapport skulle se ut fanns naturligtvis redan. SAU inspirerades av universitetet men även av AK där många jobbat tidigare. Åsa Berggren: Sydsvensk arkeologi drog igång som ett samarbete mellan arkeologer från Malmö museer och Kristianstads museum. Mallen för rapporten kom från den senare. Malmös arkeologer hade experimenterat en del med att sprida digital data med rapportern, i form av CD. Ibland fanns huvuddelen av rapporten på CD:n för mer interaktiv läsning. Det har sina kompatibilitetsproblem dock. Interna diskussioner förs om hur man ska kunna utveckla rapportkonceptet, framförallt hur digital spridning av informationen ska kunna ske på ett bra sätt, t ex via nätet. En annan sak som diskuterats har varit var den mer resonerande texten ska finnas, om den ska ingå som syntes i huvudrapporten, eller publiceras separat i ett vetenskapligt forum.
#11: Om vi vill skriva för alla så skriver vi för ingen! Vi har försökt göra så att vissa partier är vikta mest för vissa läsare. Beställaren och allmänintresserade ska få snabb och enkel information i Sammanfattningen som ligger först. Lite mer fördjupad/specialiserad information ligger i utvärderingen sist. Tekniskt/admin uppgifter ligger numera också precis i början, för att underlätta både för kollegor på grävkontor, beställare, länsstyrelse och möjligen även forskare. På längre rapporter ska det även finnas ryggtext.
