Green building rating brings together a host of sustainable practices and solutions to reduce the environmental impacts. Green building design provides an integrated approach considering life cycle impacts of the resources used.
2. GREEN BUILDING RATING SYSTEM
WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING RATING SYSTEM?
?A rating can be defined as a prerequisites and requirements that a project team
must fulfill in order to receive a certification.
TYPE OF RATING SYSTEM
? BREEAM ¨C UNITED KINGDOM BEAM ¨C HONG KONG
? LEED ¨C UNITED STATES EEWH ¨C TAIWAN
? GREEN GLOBE ¨C CANNADA GBSC ¨C SOUTH KOREA
? GREEN STAR ¨C AUSTRALIA CASBEE ¨C JAPAN
GRIHA ¨C INDIA
3. INTRODUCTION TO GRIHA
? WHAT IS GRIHA?
NAME :- GRIHA is an acronym for ¡°GREEN RATING OF INTEGRATED HABITAT
ASSESMENT¡±
COUNTRY :- INDIA
ESTABLISHMENT :- 2007
?GRIHA is the Sanskrit word meaning ¡°adobe¡±.
?An innovative tool for sustainable development by US.
4. There are three primary rating system of India:
? GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)
GRIHA is India¡¯s own rating system jointly developed by TERI and ministry of new and renewable energy, govt. of India.
? IGBC (Indian Green Building Council)
LEED is developed by U.S. green building council (USGBC) ,the organisation promoting sustainability through green building.
? BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency)
It has star based rating system : where more star means more energy efficiency. BEE has developed the Energy
Performance Index (EPI). The unit of kilo watt hours per square meter per year is considered for rating the building and
especially the targets air conditioned and non air conditioned office building.
6. OBJECTIVES OF GRIHA
oMinimize the building resource consumption, waste generating and overall
ecological impact.
oEvaluate the environmental performance of the building holistically over its entire
life cycle, their by providing a definitive standard for what constitute a green
building.
oBased on accepted energy and environmental principles, seeks to strike a balance
between established practices and emerging concepts.
oReduced energy consumption without sacrificing the comfort level.
oReduced destruction of natural areas, habitats and biodiversity, and reduced soil
loss from soil erosion etc.
7. TWO RATING SYSTEM IN INDIA
LEED
? India adapted from USGBC is
primarily based on per capita
energy consumption in developed
nations like the US which does not
work in India since India¡¯s per
capita energy consumption is very
low compared to developed
nations.
GRIHA
? More suited to Indian climate, also
unlike LEED it also not promote
usage like glass and air conditioning
equipment.
8. GRIHA RATING SYSTEM
VARIENTS OF GRIHA
? SVAGRIHA for building area ¨C 100 to 2499 sq.m
? GRIHA for building area ¨C 2500 to 1,50,000 sq.m
? GRIHA LD for building area - >50 hectare
? GRIHA VERSION 2015 (GRIHA V2015) ¨C site planning, construction management,
occupant comfort and well being, sustainable building material, performance
monitoring and validation , and innovation.
? It is 100 point system consisting of some core points.
? Different levels of certificate (1star to 5star)are awarded based on the number of
points earned.
? Min points required to earn certificate is 25.
