The capstone project involves real time process control of an electric drive motor. The project team will design a power controller for a universal motor using MOSFET gate drivers and protection. A Windows PC will interface with an 8051 microcontroller using USB to allow remote control of the motor via a HOST and client application. The project aims to generate PWM gate pulses to control the motor for applications such as pumps and industrial automation.

A universal motor is a single-phase series motor.
Universal motor is able to run on either ac or dc .
The field windings of a series motors are connected in series with the armature
windings.

16. Construction of a universal motor is similar to the construction of a DC series motor.
The whole magnetic path (armature, stator field circuit etc) is laminated.
The flow of current is in one direction in all the conductors on one side of the
armature, and in the opposite direction in all the conductors on the opposite side
of the armature.
