Bacardi has made significant progress towards its sustainability goals by reducing water consumption by over 50% since 2006. The company recycles water used to rinse recycled whiskey barrels during rum distillation in Puerto Rico, saving approximately 15,000 gallons daily. Bacardi has a long history of environmental stewardship dating back to its founding in Cuba, where it was inspired by local ingredients in surplus and has distilled rum in recycled barrels for decades.

Recycling Remains at the Heart of Bacardi
2. Over the past several years, Bacardi has set
numerous sustainability goals that aim to
improve the environment. For instance, the
largest privately held spirits company has
already reduced its water consumption by more
than 50 percent since 2006. Recently, Bacardi
announced that it recycles water during a key
phase of the rum distillation process at the
BACARDI rum facility in Puerto Rico.
3. When the company receives the recycled
white-oak whiskey barrels it uses to age its
rum, technicians first have to rinse each
barrel. Although this can add up to significant
water usage, Bacardi then recycles this
water to help control temperatures on the
rum cooling towers. Overall, the initiative
saves the company approximately 15,000
gallons of water daily.
4. According to Bacardi, the family and
company have been committed to the
environment since its earliest years in Cuba.
It has been distilling rum in recycled bourbon
barrels for decades, and the products
original recipe was inspired by local
ingredients, like molasses, which happened
to be in surplus in Cuba when the company
was first founded.
